What temp is this???

Hi Guys,

The picture is from my 914-6 before I had my aux oil cooler installed. I am curious as to what temperature this reading actually represents. I am also curious to what the actual oil temp would be when in that hashed orange zone prior to the solid orange zone. Any ideas???

Head to Harbor Freight and buy a digital laser thermometer gun for about $40. Go for a brisk drive then take some readings of the oil lines, cooler etc. at various temperature-gauge readings...this will tell you the approximate oil temp at various positions of the temperature-gauge needle.

This happened 12 months ago...car now has aux oil cooler. Trying to determine how hot it got then. Now it runs cool and has a gauge with actual numbers on it.

156 deg C (313 deg F) seems really high. I read the gauge link for the 914/6 to say:

"This temperature scale is multicolored and equipped with a warning light (amber section as in the fuel gauge insert. The scale is from 50-66 degrees Celsius in the white-striped warm-up zone, the single white line 66-129 degrees Celsius operating range with a 109.5 degree optimal marker (straight up), 129-144 degree red-striped danger range, followed by the solid red "higher than 144 degrees Celsius - your engine is cooked" range."
