Quite simple. Model year and calendar year have different definitions to different people. For example, 1966 model year cars (with clearly 66 accepted attributes such as ave 66XX paint codes, wrap around knee pads on the dash no 4-button dash, plus some other details) began production in August-ish of 1965. However, to some in the collecting and racing community, if it was produced in 1965 then it is considered the same as the model year 1965. Generally, that opinion comes up in euro vintage racing or where the owner of an early 66 car wants to sell it for the premium that is often attributed to 1965 cars.
In other words, some sellers attempt to misrepresent 1966MY cars as 1965MY cars because 1965MY cars sell at a significant premium to MY 1966 cars.
And the ideas that "Euros" consider any car built in 1965 a 1965MY car is just fantasy. Yes, there are racing considerations but they're insignificant in the big picture value discussion. Any 1966MY 911 being advertised as a 1965MY 911 by a seller in Europe is being done so only to confuse the buyer and never because "that's the way is it over there".
My Aug/Sept 66 built 305XXXS is not a 66. It is a 67.
