do you guys remove the distributor to replace points?

I haven't done this in over 10 years (had a mechanic do it last time) and I did not remove the distributor then, but looking at it with 61 year old eyes it looks like it might be easier to pull the distributor. Will I need to pull the air intake box that houses the flapper to get enough clearance? If you do it in the car, any tips? Do you use a screw holding screw driver? Al long one or a stubby? If I pull it out, then I will need to do basic timing with a test light, correct? (I am not referring to a strobe, I know how to do timing to check for maximum advance).

If you still have the flapper box in place, it is a pain to do without removing it. Depends how good your eyesight is.

I always remove the distributor, a little extra time there makes the rest of the task so much easier, plus you can clean the unit when its out, and replace the seal if it has gotten brittle from age. Clamp the distributor in a vice it will make setting the points so much easier. Be sure to lube the breaker cam, squirt a couple drops of oil on the felt wick, make sure the breaker plate is oil free, (better grounding that way) Be sure to rotate engine to TDC #1 cylinder before removing. If you put a felt tip marker line on the base before removal, and go back to that line it will be close enough to start and strobe time.

Also it's a great opportunity to set your timing to the proper spec.

So, my the distributor is a little reluctant to pull out of the case (stock '71T) and I didn't want to force it. Any suggestions?

It can take a bit of effort due to the snug fit of the rubber seal. Firm steady pulling and twisting should get it out.
