Reviving an important thread as I wish to ask some questions about core materials.
I have compared both 803.10 and a standard 400mm steering wheel. I found the latter to have a slight spongy feel whereas the former has a harder feel to it.
As Jim rightly stated above, plastic versus rubber rimmed. My preference is the rubber version (spongy feel), which brings me to the question: Was there ever a thick circumference rubber cored 380mm steering wheel?
Rounders (steering wheels in this case)
OK. all this stuff has been covered ad nauseam but I'll chime in as I think there remains (perhaps I'm wrong and someone can post the link) a misconception about "914" wheels..the ones with the counter sink on the front (toward the driver) and the bevel on the back of the wheel where it mates with the steering column shaft. These wheels will fit just fine on 911's. Yes (how many angels can stand on the head of a pin?) the mating between the wheel and the shaft, at the (back, front of of the car) bevel, is not perfect but given all the splines and the length of them, the wheel when tightened is solid as a rock Now, yes, one needs to modify the wheel for the 911 cancel ring, but the wheel will fit just ducky. I had a buyer long ago unhappy after reading that an extended thick trip "914" wheel I sold didn't fit...from a post in this long thread..that was not right! As for the 803.10 plastic wheel, this was the basis for the RSR wheel, that is same part number. BUT the 803.10 RSR wheel has padding and then the leather on top. How can we tell if an 803.10 wheel is an "RSR" wheel? From the date code. However, sure, yes, an early circa 1970 803.10 Might have become an RSR wheel, how would we know? Impossible perhaps. Here is MY original 803. 10 wheel...Also see post #53 below, and others Thanks.

My 400mm is late '69. It'a real leather. The spongy feel is very slight you'd have to press quite hard to get that feel. The plastic steering wheels (803.10) don't have that - it's rock hard.
Hence my question - was there ever a rubber-based thick 380mm steering wheels?
Hi all - Enjoyed this thread so thought I'd throw in my 2c worth (as a 911 and 914-6 Owner)
Firstly there were 2 914-6 wheels, leather was optional the Hard Rubber 914.347.803.10 and Leather 914.347.806.10 (Same number as Carrera RS, Date codes earlier - photo below - see later comment), The other wheel I have is an 914.347.805.10 Dated 6/70 which has been also called leather but the one I have is soft rubber/faux leather (moulded in stitching) and I wonder if that is a bit of poetic licence or a misprint in the 914 parts manual see Autoatlanta or they downgraded it to cut costs, either way it is a 70-71 Wheel, In the Dr B Johnson book I think he is in error when he states firstly that 914 wheel were 400mm and that the splines were different, this just adds to the confusion

Rounders,
The later, sunken hub, faux leather wheel should be 809 10 part number. If your number is different, it is likely a factory mistake. Please double check. Yes, 914 wheels are ALL 380mm..that's the whole point ! The base 803 10 wheel, ebonite, was often covered with felt and leather and became the de facto standard wheel of the RSR. Thanks.

It's not a later 'sunken hub' wheel, that's the point, dated 6/70, unless someone can post a picture of a real leather wheel numbered 914.347.805.10? The other side looks like this
