That's right -- my mechanic also erred on the side of too rich, and it had to be adjusted a few clicks before the engine started running really well. It puffed out of the exhaust when hot and on part throttle. Best is probably to check it with an air/fuel meter while driving.
Backfiring when releasing the throttle can also occur because the throttle microswitch or the Bosch speed relay is not working -- or if you leave your foot on the throttle a little bit when deaccelerating so the microswitch doesn't activate.

Rich comments appreciated, and I wasn't talking about too rich, just on the richer side. You know, like upper middle class :)
One way to compensate for the lazy foot off the throttle phenomenon is to make sure your MFI activation screw (that pushes the switch) is at the 3/4 turn limit of the recommendation or even a bit more. This way the switch gets activated even if you don't fully let up on the gas. Of course you don't want it to get activated when you are trying to feather the throttle (like driving onto your storage lift!) so experiment a bit.
