I need a little advice here. Fed-X just dropped off my new SSI heat exchangers and the left one doesn’t look like the OEM. It has a funky enclosure around the three exhaust pipes (see picture). It looks like I could just cut it off and be ok. Did they send me the wrong parts, or is this normal?Attachment 516527Attachment 516527
That's an MFI heat exchanger. Is that what you ordered?

However, in the world of part inventory the earlier version is not made, only the later version which fits both styles. As opposed to making the earlier version which wouldn't be correct for the later cars. The cost of making such individualized parts for such small sales numbers isn't economical. I think SSI ONLY made the earlier version, and got an exemption from C.A.R.B. for not having the preheat feature of the 72-73 version. Dansk only makes the later version.
Thanks for the replies. The vendors add states -The left side head exchanger has a preheater hose connector. On models not equipped, it will be necessary to block it off during installation. I assume that the preheater is the small nipple near the top. So assuming Ed’s right, which I’m sure he is, should I cut the unneeded enclosure off or just install them as is. If it won’t hurt to cut it off I’m fine with doing it.

That said, I see no reason not to remove the extra heat exchanger on the left side. Won't hurt a thing.
For our 69S we cut it off.

The pre-heater is the enclosure around the discharge pipes. The “small nipple near the top” is used on both the early and later cars.Quote:

Been a few years but if I remember correctly we used a cutoff wheel. I think you could do it either way as it isn't welded to the pipes themselves.
