THE MARATHON DE LA ROUTE, an 84-hour epic endurance race run between 1965 and 1971, was an event that pushed both car and driver to breaking point. Referred to by competitors as the ‘World's Longest Motor Race', a name which went some way towards describing this epic test of human and mechanical stamina and survival. Participating in the Marathon de la Route was like driving three and half Le Mans 24-Hours, back-to-back.

Porsche had a new weapon at its disposal for the 1968 event as its 911 now boasted the new 2268 mm long-wheelbase body as would found in its 1969 production cars. Although the lead car was entered as a 911 R, this car was not a full spec ‘R' as it was fitted with an uprated 911 S engine developing 190 bhp that featured Bosch mechanical fuel injection. Driven for 84 hours between August 20-24, 1968 to overall victory at the Nürburgring by factory drivers Herbert Linge, Dieter Glemser, and Willi Kauhsen ‘009' covered more than 6,275 miles. This fantastically original factory works car, in the same ownership since 1974, is recognized as having achieved the first international victory for a long-wheelbase Porsche 911. Of the four 911 GTS produced by the factory, this is the only example to have survived in its original specification.

It's a really nice car but way above my pay grade.

Should be worth more than almost any R. (Except Colliers probably)

In the letter from Porsche on post 4, it says three GTS’s were built for endurance racing. I also hear there is a fourth? Was the letter just a mistake or ...? Is there any more documentation on how many Porsche designated as GTS’s? Hugh?

On the number that were built I would have to say I dont know for certain. The letter from the factory says that three of these cars were built for the Marathon. - In fact it says that this car the letter was about was "the third of three vehicles built by the racing department for competition in endurance events".
That does not preclude any other cars being built - ie for R&D generally or for Rally events.
However it seems to me that these cars could not be entered in any event that required the entrants to be homologated so it is unlikely that any were built for other official events.

I have not seen any evidence of any GTS cars competing in other events in 1968 or 1969.

That again does not rule out others being built. However the only possible ones that could be built would probably have vins in the very low numbers in 1969 - say up to vin #12 or #20, given that the three identifies were #003, #008 and #009.
Given access to the kardexes (or better still the build book this could be resolved relatively easily - however i don't see that access happening easily :)
I have also seen references to one or more additional cars but never proof - Indeed i am not sure what "proof" is apart from a build book entry.

One "trick" in looking at the factory cars, especially the competition cars, is to look at their registration numbers. Mostly they register sister cars with consecutive numbers. So the GTS cars were SH 7685 and SH 7686 although i don't have the third registration number but it is almost certain to be 84 or 87. Discovering that BOTH were used would be a pointer to a fourth car.
The three Acropolis cars were SM 2727, 2728 and 2729.

One car that has been mentioned in relation to maybe being a GTS is the practice car that was used in the Acropolis in 1969 by Toivonen (and apparently as a practice car in other events). I have a photo of it with rally plate #9 at tye acropolis (which must have been in practice because that rally plate was not used in the event) but the registration plate is not a factory one - it looks like a Swiss VS plate but I cant read it all. That car is said to be vin 119 300 004 but also having the versuch vin 320-017. A pointer to is also being a GTS car is that it is a consecutive number with #003 and it would not be unusual to have two identical cars with consecutive vin numbers - examples like that abound in the "special cars".

It is interesting that it has a 320 xxx versuch vin as well. 119 300 002 which was registered SH 7200 also had a versuch vin (320-011) and was a Ferry Porsche family car as well as being a R&D car. If the car used by Toivonen was a real GTS it would probably have been ineligible to compete. But it would not be ineligible to be used as a practice / recce car. Such use would give good data to the Versusch engineers on the durability of the aluminium parts - as would entering three cars in the Marathon de la route.

I have a working theory on these cars that they were a (temporary) technological dead end for the 911's. Porsche really did use the competition program to develop the cars. They had a lot of experience from 1966 or earlier with "plastic" parts / Fibreglass etc with the prototype cars. they had extensive experience with Aluminium in the 50's in particular for the competition cars then.

The theory is that in the quest for lightening the 911's they used the GTS's in 1969 but they did not give the best outcome at the time in some way so they went the "plastic" route in 1970 for the ST's. Those car had extensive lightweight parts but they were generally "plastic" parts especially the body parts.
Therefore in this scenario the "GTS" cars are actually R&D cars that were let "out into the wild" in selected events as well probably have been used in other extensive durability tests to see if Aluminum was the correct route for the LWB 911's to follow or not.

It does seem that the 003 can be called a GTS, if it has the alloy panels and other race bits. The engine number might tell more too.

Regarding aluminum versus plastic: weren’t the earlier 911R’s plastic too? Maybe it was more economical for aluminum in very small lots? Or they wanted the cars to be more similar to road cars for entry in the Marathon?

And how does one prove it’s a GTS without the factory referencing it as such? Good question. Maybe the alloy panels.

Sanders, that’s great! So we now have four confirmed GTS’s. Three that were factory race werks entered competition cars. One used to test the Acropolis rally course and later privately raced. It’s probably fair to say that if there were any others they were for internal testing only as none have ever surfaced? What’s the date of the letter? Is it possible to ask if there were any more? (Actually just noticed Olaf Lang signed it, and since he died it must be an older letter. Maybe mid 1990’s)

It’s also interesting that the original engines on the Marathon race cars were 639000x numbers while this one is 6390650. Consequently it’s pretty clear that that both the engine and transmission were replaced/swapped at least once while used internally, and then Porsche changed both again prior to delivery. The kardex would tell us the private ownership engine and transmission numbers. Do you know them?

The letter is from 1990.
The original engine number per the Kardex was 63900004 while the original trans per Kardex was 9284107. It's all a bit confusing since 9284107 is also associated with 00009. And it appears engine number 6390650 was the replacement engine unless the car was sold as a roller, and it may have been since Jurgen Barth remembers selling the car to Peru in 1969 to a "customer who had wrecked his car". Gunter Steckkonig, a factory driver, supplied the following practice information in 2010. The picture is 00004 running in the 1969 rally "los Caminos del Incas" in South America. Driver Chachi Dibos and co-driver Lothar Ranft. Lothar probably had his hands on all GTSs as he was a werks technician, and as a young technician lived behind the research facility in a tent! The cars are the stars but there's plenty of color in the people. He was sent to Peru to help tune 00004 for the extremely high altitudes of the Inca rally, fell in love and stayed.

thanks for sharing that information. That adds a great deal to the picture about these cars. Given that 004 was noted as a T car for the 1969 Monte Carlo I think that it is the red car at the LHS of this photo below (registered S-H 7347) and MAYBE this is a photo of all the 4 GTS's together. The other photos are some of the ones I have for that car as a practice car for the 69 Monte. Note the early style front vent windows in the second last photo but it is definitely a LWB car

Hugh, the pictures you posted of the LWB car with vent windows brought me back to an article of the Marathon de la Route 1968. A private(?) entry #42 driven by a guy named Herman (Hans???) could be 00004 but has a different registration number.Attachment 508016

My scan isn't working so I can't show pictures of 1969 press cars from Brian Long's "Porsche The Definitive History 1963 to 1971" but there must be 32XXXX cars on pages 106-116. LWB cars with SWB front and rear tail lights. I believe the 911S on page 106 with registration number S-H 7462 is the same car on pages 115 and 116. I've always thought that 911S could be 00004 but with the pictures you posted showing vent windows now I doubt it.

I have studied the pics you posted in post #19 and I think I see in your second photo of 00004 a SWB front directional and horn grill on the right and a LWB light/grill on the left. Given the aforementioned press pics of cars with front SWB lights if a prototype needed a replacement fender it might not match. Any thoughts?

I looked this car over for a couple hours when it was at the Jay Peak parade in 2016. The car is basically as it was raced. No high dollar restoration there.

The Long book is one of the few I don't own - however I have a couple of pictures of a red car with the plates S-H 7462. As far as i can work out that car belonged to the Press department for photos and journalist test drives. The photos are at Schloss Solitude (I have a date 69 on one and 68 on another but they were obviously taken as a part of the same photo shoot for brochures, postcards etc. there is one photo that you cannot see the licence plate but it must be the same car given the same location and posed with the other car (a Bahama yellow US T with plates S-H 7460)
Looking at the red car I cant see anything that would signal that it was not a very early production (stock) car for the press fleet.
i have attached the 3 photos i have but would be interested to see the photos you reference if anyone else could post them

On the prototype cars i would have thought that they might put anything that was handy in a parts bin, or even test parts not in production yet, on them so I would never be surprised what parts (or mis matched parts) were on them

So we have the registration number of 3 of the 4 GTS’s?

And 0004 is different than the others being a prototype? I saw an early post suggesting it was a converted SWB to LWB but that doesn’t make sense? Sanders, is it your impression it was always a LWB? Why did it end up with certain SWB features (what are they?) and why didn’t the others?

Are we looking for this? This should make all four registration numbers?

And my guess is also two of these that tried to enter in LeMans GT 2.0 class and were not accepted. We know the factory werks team tried to enter two 911’s in 1969 and they only built these as road race cars to our knowledge that year.

I thought it was a replacement engine hence the question mark. I just updated it.

So that almost fully completes the picture except for the alternate chassis numbers.

I am curious which SWB features 0004 had the others didn’t.

The only features 00004 has that are SWB are tail lights, for sure, front turn signals and horn grill, maybe, and the driver's door latch panel. Everything else is LWB.

But in that photo Hugh the car shows double tie downs on the hood where other photos show a single tie down?

I think I see a front vent window hinge. And yes to two hold downs, the same as at the Inca Rally. Also the front bumper looks different with fog light brackets, the addition of a roll bar and repositioning the hood lights. While striping the paint I determined the factory repainted the car at least four times. From June 68 to Sept 69 it appears this car was reconfigured many times.

I agree with seeing the vent window hinge.

It would have been surprising if they equipped the car with only one tie down for the Acropolis. It had a reputation as a rough car wrecker. I am still not certain of the identity of this car BUT I think it is almost certain that it is 0004.

Other sites (Pbase etc) have identified it as Toivonen and mistaken it as his winning car but that ran rally number 1 and was registered S M 2929.
All the factory cars ran two tie downs and that type of front bumper with the foglight cutouts. But they had rally numbers 1, 4 and 6. There was no one with rally plate 9 in the entry list (or at least on any entry list that I can find)

There is no doubt that it has an Acropolis rally plate of the type used that year on the front bonnet. As mentioned before I cant read the licence plate BUT I have now seen GREEK plates of the period and the follow the same format - two letters followed by a space and 4 numbers and black (or very dark blue numbering on a white background.)

So i am now wondering IF the car in the photo was on Greek registration. I cant see the detail well enough to recognize the driver to see if this actually IS Toivonen in the car or is something else altogether including the possibility that it is a shot of the actual rally with an unknown crew in it (which means it still may be 0004 but loaned to a local driver for the event??)
it has never made a lot of sense to me why a practice car would run with a set of rally numbers on it (although they did at the Targa Florio but usually with the addition of a T) but to date I have had no other explanation apart from Porsche entering car #9 s the practice car but still that does not explain the registration number

Finally I got my 'puter to give up one scan. This is from page 116 from the Long book. 1969 911S with SWB turn signal lights. Maybe a 320xxx car?Attachment 508154

No That is the other two. # 4 is S-M 2928 for Larousse (119300931) and #6 is S-M 2927 for Waldegaard (119300912)

The letter also states that the chassis number should be stamped in the chassis. Anyone know where? Does it take the place of the VIN stamping, production number stamping or is it someplace else?

It is the production number stamp and it also appears on the vin/paint tag driver's door pillar.

From what i have seen the 320-xxx numbers appear stamped in different places in different cars, as well as on one car written in crayon on the dash

here are some pictures of different one (not all 1969 ones)

310-001S seems to have the stamps in all the places that normal vins are
320-011 1969 S #0002 an Ex Ferry Porsche car has it in crayon on the dash and on the paint badge but not in the front trunk stamping which is the 119300002 vin
320-012 (1969 E #0001) seems to have it in the dash but the front stamping is the 119200001 vin

Original Scheel seat which the R also had. Even mentioned in the post race write up evaluation. Some Scheel had rivets some didn’t, and I don’t know why. R’s and GTS used the same base from the photos.

That makes sense! I was looking at the photo of the most original R and comparing.

It’s interesting that apparently the 911R that won the Marsthon the prior year in 1967 also had aluminum bodywork unlike most R’s

Can anyone else confirm that? Or speculate why?

Copying my post from another thread on the lightweight thin metal body shell of the GTS and that it is apparently lighter than a 911R.

Factory documentation indicating that the lightweight GTS’s used a thin metal shell. Plus aluminum front / rear bumpers, door skins, engine and hood deck lids, and front fenders/wings. Even things like roll bar and headlight buckets were aluminum.

Note that fully loaded for racing with fluids and tools they were weighed at approximately 928kg racing weight. (Actual weighed GTS’s were 928-930kg - full fuel, oil, tools, spares included as ready to race) but I suspect they state 940kg on some docs as it ties into the homologation weight of the dry 1969S). Subtract the 72kg of fuel and that’s down to 850kg. Then subtract oil and tools and spare tire and spares, and these were lighter than the 911R which is misleadingly quoted with no fluids or tools etc. (and none of which actually weighed the 810kg that is often quoted).

The lightest 911 model made.

The most often thrown around number is 810kg dry, but I saw actual numbers that were much higher.

Collier has the best one out there, and they quote 822kg dry (no fuel, oil or parts)

Hence the GTS on an apples to apples basis is lighter.

Of course, a special customer could order a 911R; the GTS was pure factory built and factory raced. No customers allowed!

that is only for the 4 (or maybe only 3 of the 4) GTS cars which were not homolagated. the homologation weights were for the minimum of 1000 cars of the same spec so IMO it cant solve that question

that is only for the 4 (or maybe only 3 of the 4) GTS cars which were not homolagated. the homologation weights were for the minimum of 1000 cars of the same spec so IMO it cant solve that question

I think I solved the mystery of why only one 911R was in aluminum.

The rules for the class entered in the Marathon de la Route Required metal bodywork. So they must have made R3 just like the GTS’s specific for that recent and class.

Soooo...Registration tags for the GTSs appear to be two different lengths. 00004 looks to be 20 inches long while 00009 looks like 18. Talk about weight savings in race trim!

Any chance of seeing those 30 interior photo's Sanders.? I know that 2 of the factory cars had The Auto Total extinguishers fitted. Would really like to see if this applied to all. ? Probably did.

The level of factory documentation on and originality of this car is incredible, as it was basically only used for one factory werks effort. No accidents. Stored soon after. Effectively a handmade race car touched by everyone important to Porsche racing back then.

I don't think it's a 69 GTS, but rather a rare MY70 limited edition S. German market car (?), the one on the right in the MY70 intro brochure. I don't recall the details, but there is a discussion of it somewhere on the forum.

The butterfly engine and MFI pump look very special

Just a few observations. Black oil filter. Oil filler neck with 908? plumbing appears to need support and is attached to the drip rail. Tag panel appears to me have a unique stamping and lacks the channel for the rubber seal to lid. Car would have been built in 6/68 and most likely would have SWB taillights, can't tell from picture. By Sept 69 all these research cars had many parts changed so the rear lid having provisions for both left and right rear wiper mounting is inconclusive, but steel and alu 3 bar lids only had provision for a left wiper mount. Also, I believe GTSs were built with standard "S" engines, but it is 9/69. Thanks for sharing. And I'm glad Porsche reconfigured 914 flares.

Seems to be all pictures of the same red car, with the wipers inverted left/right.

The car in the background must have carried someone important or been loud enough to draw attention away from the berg spyder.

That looks like a Marathon car with that center stripe and could be a GTS. Tag is not the one used in MdR. Definitely a different car than your previous post

I enjoyed owning 119300009. I finally yielded to knowing I’m more passionate about 356’s than 911’s.

This was the car i mentioned a couple of years ago that was being worked on at Prill Porsche classics in the UK. Took a few shots of the car at last weeks Classics at the castle event here in the UK. I didn't know that they fitted my harnesses to the car and they have gone for the cheaper version with the aircraft buckle.:rolleyes: The carpet was all wrong too. Shame about the details.

Bumping this great thread with another photo of 1968 Marathon de la Route entry #29, a factory lightweight 1969 GTS serial number 119300008 with license plate SH-7687. This car retired early from the race and its current whereabouts are unknown.

My guess is that this is all they made.

The rarest 911 model of all. Officially called by Porsche the 911 GT-S.

And my guess is also two of these that tried to enter in LeMans GT 2.0 class and were not accepted. We know the factory werks team tried to enter two 911’s in 1969 and they only built these as road race cars to our knowledge that year.
