I've always liked 356s. Cool thing about this one is that the first owner was an uncle of mine. When I was a young boy my mother had mention that he'd been a race car driver. "He drove in the Monte Carlo rally or something,"she said. I'd always thought he was pretty cool but then I was so in awe of him that I could hardly speak around him let alone ask him about his driving exploits. Later in my teens he'd invited my brother and I to the German GP at Hockenheim. We were huge Gille Villeneuve fans. When the tickets turned out to be weekend VIP passes we thought we'd died and gone to heaven. At this point it was becoming evident that my uncle was still involved with the racing scene. I was so overwhelmed trying to take everything in that weekend that I still didn't get to speak with him that much. It was't until after his death that my interest in Porsches led me to stumble over more info about him. It turns out that not only was he the president of the German automobile club at the time but he was also the head of the FIA! I'm not sure but I think it was from the late 60s well into the 70s. He'd had an active racing career in the fifties running at LeMans, in the Monte Carlo Rally and winning his class in a 356 in the Mille Miglia. Holly Cow! I can't believe I didn't get up the courage to ask him more about his younger days when I had the chance.
It's so great to stumble across old pictures of him from time to time.
