Well, at first glance it looks like it is fairly complete, but in pretty rough shape. Most of the '69 bits are there and it includes some nice original docs, but the MFI is missing on the engine (which is a shame, yet the MFI fuel console is still in the engine bay).
Overall, I see a LOT of rust repair in the future of that car. I'm sure others will comment, but with a $35K starting price I see the buyer getting upside down pretty quickly with the resto.
To quote Kevin Jeannette from the previous discussion on this car.
The problem is, after its restored to a 90 - 100 point perfection, its going to cost somewhere between (labor of love job done ina backyard) 75K to 100K. If it is done by someone who is in the Business and actually thinks he-they can make money restoring the "S", will charge somewhere around 130 to 170K. Thats right 130K plus, plus, and remember, first you gotta find a MFI system to re-fit to the engine, hoping its OG to the car and what about all the other damaged parts.

From post #34 in the thread (below) . . .
. . . Hello everyone, I am the the person selling the "S" this thread is about. Let me first tell you I am very happy to have found this forum and have very much enjoyed reading your post. I actully found this site when looking for inforamtion about the value of this car. I am getting lots of offers to buy the car and do not really know what is a good price.
I did want to speak to the "flooding" issue. I can assure you the car has never been flooded. My father is good friends with the previous owner (2nd owner) and remembers the car when it was purchased from the original owner (who was in the army and dad thinks he bought the car while stationed in Germany). The car really started to go down hill when the second owner stored it outside (5-8 years we think?). All of the seals are bad on the car and it leaks some kind of bad. In fact, when I washed it before taking the pictures, there was water all over the place just from the hose. Dad said when he bought the car is was very moist and even had some water standing it the passenger floorboard. Anyways, he kept the car in the garage or covered (for the 12 years or so he has owned it) expecting to restore it once he retired...but with the cancer, that will never happen. So now we sell the car.
I am surprised to learn about the interest in this car. I had no idea it was desirable or had much value at all. I actually just thought we may get a few thousand for a parts car or something. I have been blown away by the offers I have recieved. One of them is so good, I am tempeted to take it, especially after reading your comments.
I do have a question for you porsche experts if you do not mind. One of the potential buyers wants me to photograph the motor and transmission number. I found the number on the motor and it matches the invoice number but I cannot find the number on the transmission. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thank you so much. I have enjoyed your forum very much.

If you are interested in this car, you should call Dennis Collins and ask the questions. Dennis' business is one of the largest resellers of Jeeps and parts in the country and is a major car enthusiast, very knowledgeable. If anyone gets REAL serious and wants another set of eyes on the car ( I WILL NOT DO A PRE PURCHASE INSPECTION), it is not too far from me and I would take a look (make photos) at specific issues you might have that have not been resolved satisfactorily for you. I go that way frequently and am going early next week.
Hi
I am new on here and was wondering is there a market place discussions thread ? I am in the process of offering for sale a 1972 S modified to an RS and am finding it tricky to get a fair bench mark price
car is in good condition but is neither mint or MN's - however as i know from owning 911's there is very little rust !
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...t/DSCF9441.jpg
Would appreciate any guidance on where to look
Many Thanks

Here we go...
Let's be prudent here gentleman; unless you're a ready, willing, and able buyer please be mindful of your forecasting and value speculation. While people on this board may be informed better than the average 911 owner, it's easy to over-estimate what something is worth. Ultimately buyers decide actual values.
Assuming the car is in Ireland, shipping costs certainly will affect value as U.S. buyers account for much of the current purchasing population.
Looks like a nice car. Good luck with your mission.
Kieran:
Post more pictures and details for starters. We'll be glad to do our best to assist!

1973 911S Coupe
#1325 of 1430 911S produced for 1973. July 24 completion makes this one of the very last mechanically injected S cars produced. Extremely rare factory black coupe. No sunroof,no power windows, no A/C.Wheels are 15X7 fuchs all around but are off getting refinished. $150K
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...11s-coupe.html
I suspect he realized showing a picture with no wheels on the car was going to raise more questions than it answered. Good call. But better call is to wait until the car is ready to sell.
Sign of the times: When a seller thinks he can ask a-buck-fifty for a bare bones '73 S coupe without a respectable (really respectable) presentation you know the market is messed up.
I emailed the guy with a few questions and only got one word answers. Did not even want to give me his phone number or call me back. He can keep it for that price. Bet you see this one listed again by him in the near future, and at a better price.

Polo red on black leather
. . . . Finished in classic and desired Polo Red with beautiful correct new Black leather interior. This incredible motorcar was purchased in southern California where it had been beautifully restored with over $21,000 spent on the mechanicals alone! Very seldom does one get an opportunity to acquire such a rare 911S, especially with the great pedigree of being an original California car since new. We are proud to offer this investment grade 911S to the most alert collector, investor or enthusiast who appreciates the investment potential of this extremely hard to find model. Bid with confidence – you will not be disappointed in this magnificent motorcar!
HISTORY OF THE PORSCHE 911S:
The 911 "S" was Porsche's top-of-the-range sporting model throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, a period when the purest and most desirable versions of the 911 were produced. The 911S boasted a higher fifth gear, anti-rollbars front and rear, Koni shock absorbers and ventilated disc brakes, later also receiving alloy front brake calipers. The engine was also improved with higher compression and improved breathing which produced 160 bhp. Only 4,689 of these high-specification short-wheelbase 911S's were produced in coupe form in 1967-68.
Another 1,160 of the less-desirable, from a performance standpoint, 911S Targas were built. Of the coupes, probably less than 100 were available in right-hand drive. (In 1969 the wheelbase of the 911 was lengthened, reducing its agility and starting the overall softening that was to dilute the sporting essence of Piech's original design.) . . .
(not mine)
that 67S has been on eBay for several months, any thoughts on why it hasn't sold? Price doesn't seem too crazy, but I would think they would make a point of saying it had the original engine if indeed it did.
There was an earlier thread on this car discussing numerous flaws, incorrect parts and a generally cobbled up car. That said, some suggested it could be put right for 20G's or so.
Thanks, I should have searched b4 asking.

These pics aren't much help --- no shots of the (structural) places I would look at. Tensioner upgrade + funky exhaust + Moon-buggy ride-height make me wonder about any other of the inevitable 'up-grades.' And even if the thing is 'all there,' there's the small matter of getting it to run/move, title, transpo, blah-blah-blah ('How come this car got parked?')
On the other hand . . . Nebraska? Could be a deal. Take out that Home-equity line check-book, check it out. Worse comes to worse . . . you might maybe pick-up a nice watch --- or that Mauser
And don't forget to ask about/look for the toolkit and any paperwork . . . you won't be comin' back
Looks like a Becker Mexico with original Porsche/Becker knobs. Wonder what the underside looks like; at any rate, sugar scoops and U.S. bumper height have their charms in cases like this.
Just curious, do we figure this number because it's a 73 with fogs and sport seats that's mostly complete? Seems when you figure engine/paint/trim/labor etc., you may be into this car for a good chunk of change despite the positives. This always becomes an interesting conversation when you back into value based upon "last trade" and cost to resto/cleanup or whatever you decide to do with this S.
I'm fairly close and have family with in a hour of there so I might have to dig a little on this one.
I just got off the phone with the owner Kathaleen, as my son in law and daughter own some ground a couple of miles from her.
Here is what she said. She has had calls from both coast's, Texas (had a guy fly in to take a look from Dallas), the local Porsche Dealer has been out (owns one of if not the largest Ford truck dealership in the country-Woodhouse) has had an offer of $50,000.00 from a lady in California. I asked her how much she would take if she were to sell it today and she stated she had no idea but more than 50K
They are the 2nd owner with the original owner a Dr in Omaha Richard Schultz, they have the original title, tool kit is complete, was overhauled by a local Porsche legend Bud Dunklau of Road and Track in 86, that was 3 years after they bought it. It was not a daily driver but was driven regularly until 3 years ago when her husband got sick and passed away, still driven occasionaly now, never driven in the winter (great thing with the salt we use here on our roads) they do live 3 miles off the pavement so it has been on the gravel. She also said they painted it once and that when they went to paint it the local Porsche dealer (at the time) said the original paint color was no longer available but that the color they did use was a factory color (what year she did not know) She has had a lot of interest and really does not want to sell the car but given age and not going to stay on the ranch they felt some one else should enjoy it.
I am here to tell you guys that this Sandhills Ranching woman is as honest as anyone you would ever want to meet and I would struggle to doubt anything she would tell you. You just have no idea of the way of life she and lots of other folks up there in the hills live. She was happy to talk about her husband living in Germany in the 50's buying a 356, bringing it back home and trading of a 67 Chevelle SS and how she wished she had both of those cars back.
I hope she gets a bank full of money for the car!
Best of luck Kathaleen!!!!!!

So, looks like a mixed bag to me based on Mecum imho. Note that a lot of the Porsche 356 numbers at Mecum weren't spectacular as well.
In regards to the Pano article, the top end of the market has validated the top numbers for the S(private sales were already there), but the "good driver" numbers on the S (in general), and the T and E numbers appear to be unsupported from what I can see in the market.
Any results from the other auctions to make the case of a high tide?
e
Unless a deal was worked with the auction company, doesn't the buyer pay an additional 10% above the selling price? IF that is the case, then the cheapest car was 93.5k. Doesn't that support the "driver numbers" listed in Pano? I leave it to the experts here, but I was curious to know this as I watched Mecum.
Also - I saw that RM was listing a 1970 S that I had discussed with the seller about 1-2 months ago. It was somewhere around high $70s / close to $80k. Silver 1969 S. I don't see the results from their auction, but was curious if someone knew?
Yeah - sorry I saw in another thread here on the registry that it was at Russo & Steele. My bad. I saw that the car I am thinking of sold for $55k. Ouch to the seller, as I believe he/she spent nearly $80k for the car pretty recently.
http://www.russoandsteele.com/collec...sche-911/28021
IMO, Mecum and Russo & Steele are not the best venues for collector quality European sports cars.

I was attempting to get a PPI done, had some difficulty lining one up, and was then told that it had been sold to someone in California. I originally saw it on eBay. The description and the photos are even exactly the same. I guess I didn't realize how the auction companies work. If my memory serves me correctly and Cal is correct about the side script and hood stripes being removed ,this car was purchased from our own Don A some time ago and has been languishing at $185K ?
Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty certain this car is one and the same ,neat piece of kit, Bert
Yes that was my old car from years ago. It was featured in total 911 not long ago. It is a really cool and special car and I am surprised it has not found a new home.

68 - 911L ; For sale for more then a year, was in the paddock of RRIV.
John Glynn did a nice article on the car. The price is what someone is willing to pay.
I have been watching (and admiring) that "L" for some time now -- somewhere this week I saw it listed at $149k --

. . . Ernest Messenger was drawn to the world of rally racing. He knew he wanted to compete, and he knew he wanted to be competitive. In 1968 the Porsche 911 was the perfect weapon to challenge the rallies of the U.S. and Europe. Having taken 1st and 2nd at the Rally Monte Carlo the 911 was proving to be a fierce opponent. So in early 1968 an order was placed for a Porsche 911 with a long list of factory rally options. The car was built in June of 1968 and on its completion Mr. Messenger travelled to Germany to collect his 911 L and drive it throughout Europe.
At some point everything changed and Messenger decided that his coveted Porsche wasn't going to be raced after all. Instead the future of the rare short wheel base car was to be limited to driving only on the open road during weekend excursions. The 911L lived this pampered lifestyle until Mr. Messenger sold the car in 2003 showing only 99,500 miles. It has been in only two collectors hands ever since.
Thanks to Mr. Messenger’s change of heart we now have the fortune of presenting a numbers matching, rally spec survivor that is in excellent condition.
The car has undergone an extensive mechanical restoration and inspection to insure that all systems are in proper running condition. The original patina of the body and interior was not touched. The trunk, undercarriage and suspension have been refinished. The original engine and transmission have been completely rebuilt and upgraded. This 911L is ready for vintage racing, tours, or shows.

(Not mine)
With all that talk about period correctness in the ad, why was it not rebuilt correctly and why was it not put on a proper set of XWX instead of the modern low-profile tires? Carrera tensioners are specifically outlawed for early cars at many events and the MSD is excluded too. 7R's are not conform the homologation sheet, that says 5,5.
For 150k what's it going to be, "Period (FIVA/FIA) hotrod" or "usual US hotrod"? I think the "confused" spec is what's holding a sale back. A shame really, because it seems to have been a proper time-warp gem. No offence meant to whoever worked on it but I think it would sell in a heartbeat if it was still untouched.
edit: yes I understand the mods are easily reversible. But I don't see the buyer at this level swapping a set of tensioners back before going to the track ;)
I originally found and had the restoration work done as it did need it. It did run period race rubber but it was changed. The MSD and tensioners are allowed here in the US. Some other things have been changed since I owned it but for those who remember it was a car that was often emulated by others. The items are small to change back and it is a great car. I am actually thinking of buying it back. 150 is a deal. You guys in Europe are missing a lot of boats lately :)

That was a sporty looking sign, no doubt. A file? Pink one at that!

Seller's schtick . . .
. . . 1969 Porsche 911S Targa. This is a very solid, running driving S that really needs only some cosmetic attention/restoration to be a very, very nice early car. This car was originally Bahama Yellow (paint code 6805) but was painted red at some point. It still has its original front fenders but has been fitted with SC quarter panels and a fiberglass rear spoiler and bumper. These are pretty easy to swap out and can be sold to offset the cost of returning the car to factory specification. This 911 still has its original drivetrain, the S motor (901/10) was rebuilt with new pistons and cylinders about 10k miles ago. Weber carbs and SSI heat exchangers were fitted but the original mechanical fuel injection was saved and is included with the car. I've driven this S around a bit and it runs, shifts, and brakes very well. The only rust that need to be addressed is a small spot at the base of the drivers door and drivers side fender. With good early cars fetching over $100,000, there is enough room as priced to do a light restoration and still be on the right side of market value . . .
Not mine, either
Tragic. How could anybody take a 69s & make an 80s pastiche.
The 1980's were a dangerous time for our early cars...
Know this car . lots of rust undersides. front inner wings replaced and rear long.. are gone.
was for sale 12K last yr tho lol
Didn't see this car shared....very nice early S...$135k with tons of bidding..and no sale:

Bahama yellow over black vinyl
Here's the Seller's Hemming's schtick . . .
. . . Spectacular original survivor sold through Vasek Polak and remained in California until 2012. (It is now stored in New York). The original Black California licence plates and Vasek dealer frames are still on the car. This S was ordered by Joseph Wechselberger of Ontario California.as documented by the original delivery paperwork. Mr. Wechselberger took delivery in August of 1967 and kept the S until 2005 when he sold it to the second owner who used the sparingly until 2102. This Bahama Yellow 67S is nearly all original including first paint with the exception of the right rear quarter which was painted years ago. This panel is an excellent match and there is no evidence of damage. This was likely painted to repair something minor. This S features outstanding trim and glass, Proper and original engine and front compartment, a beautiful original interior with clear bright gauges, a working proper Blaupunkt radio, Original seats with optional head rests left and right, original carpet with NOS Porsche Sisal mats, and a beautiful wood wheel with deluxe horn butterfly. The plaid period suitcase that is shown in the images is included.
This original 67S has irreplaceable patina that only a well cared for original Porsche shows. All of the original paperwork, original owner's manuals, and full toolkit with jack are all the originals to this car and of course are included. The engine has recently been resealed and serviced. The bottom of the car is the original undercoat and is generally clean however it is not show detailed. The wheel wells have the undercoat intact. The floor pan is flaking in a few areas. Naturally I wanted to present this S in it's original state and let the decision on the bottom of the car be the next owner's. The S has been generally cleaned and again it is shows very well but is not show detailed. The S starts easily and operates well.
Original paint Early 911S models are becoming increasingly hard to find. I really do not know how many more of these are not discovered at this point in time. This S offers great originality and condition, good documentation, a top color for 67 and excellent provenance. Please view the images that will show the true condition of this wonderful 67S. Please call me with any questions . . .

Fun website, no? ;)
I'd be pretty suspicious of a car that comes into the country sans title. A salvage title might have solved the short term problem but what if?

Tom
I just listed this '73 S Targa this morning. Its getting bid up pretty quickly. #9113310628
http://tinyurl.com/aypytnq
. . . General Information: The car was purchased in Tucson, Arizona from a Michael Thompson. It is beleived to be a 2 owner car. The car was Guards Red when purchased and was repainted Siver Metallic. The original color is belived to be Silver Metallic, and is backed up by, Porsche's Certificate of Authenticity, that comes with the car . . .
. . . The car is a unique 911 S Targa, equipped with factory (rare) Recaro leather sport seats in very good original condition. The dash has been replaced with a correct factory part. The Targa top was replaced in 2006. The carpeting in in good conditionand as replaced about 5 years ago. The carpeting has been covered by Porsche mats. Most rubber was replaced at the time of painting . . .
. . . Engine: In 1987, the 2.4S engine was replaced with a high performance 2.7 engine first built by Gary Pumroy, who now has a shop in Albuquerque. The engine has "solex" cams (between early E-S). In November 2007, this engine was rebuilt by Jay Moore (Air Cooled Only) of Prescott, AZ. Jay had been trained and worked for many years by Andial. He knows the early cars. There is about 2000 miles on the rebuilt engine as the car is only used for club events . . .
. . . Jay rebuilt the Weber carbs in 2006. The transmission was also rebuilt at approximately that time and a Weltmeister short shift kit was added . . .
. . . The engine compression was boosted to 9.2 to 1 with C & E pistons and the "solex" cams were retained. The car is equipped with a radiator-type auxiliary oil cooler with metal lines and thermostat from an early Porsche race car. The car runs very cool and uses 91 octane fuel, with no additives added. Jay Moore estimated that the car, which is close to 73 Carrera RS specs, develops about 230 h.p . . .
. . . Options: The car came equipped with factory air, but in the Arizona heat, this original unit was quite ineffective and was removed. The original parts to this unit are available except the front condenser. The most unusual option are the factory Recaro leather sport seats. The headlights are H-4s . . .
. . . The wheels are 6 in X 15 front and 7 X 15 rear. The two original 6 X 15 rims are in storage and go with the car. Tires are 205 x 60x 15 front and 215 x 60 x 15 rear. All are BF Goodrich H rated with 75% tread remaining . . .
Most rubber was replaced at the time of painting . . .
. . . Exceptional low mileage 1973 911S Targa . . .
. . . Matching numbers. High quality paint with no significant flaws. Steel front bumper, original sport seats. Matching date 15 X 6" Fuchs wheels. Functioning air conditioning. Original Mechanical Fuel Injection in good state of tune. Car runs strong, shifts smoothly -- even the first 1-2 shift of the day -- and really needs nothing to drive and enjoy. In terms of completeness, fit and finish, I'd say this car is ready for a PCA "wash and shine" competition . . .
. . . Excellent chassis with no rust to be found. (I have many photographs of the underside of the car. Originally delivered in highly desirable silver metallic #936, this car has undergone a recent full windows out repaint. Good gaps, as you can see in the photos. Hood/trunk and engine compartment margins show no evidence of accident. Unlike many vintage Targas, the doors open and shut with the car on a lift. Exceptionally flex-free chassis reflects a pampered Southern California life. All suspension bushings have been renewed . . .
. . . Full leather restoration of original sport seats done less than 300 miles ago by TRE. The dash was expertly recovered by them at the same time . . .
. . . In my opinion, this would be a good candidate to 'buy and hold' or take it to Monterey this Summer . . .
. . . Car located in Southern California. It can be seen, driven and checked out prior to purchase. Interior and suspension work was done by TRE in Van Nuys. Some maintenance and MFI tuning by Scientific Auto in Pasadena . . .
. . . CoA confirms matching engine, transmission and correct color and equipment . . .
. . . I am listing this car on behalf of the seller. I originally assisted in the purchase of the car for him and know the car very well. I have driven more than a few early 911s -- I've owned over 3 dozen myself -- and this Targa is easily the best I have ever driven in terms of chassis rigidity. It literally feels like a coupe on the road. I will be happy to answer your questions or arrange access . . .
. . . There are 77 photos of the car on Flickr:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/3238570...7631599201554/
. . . First impressions, In the past year, I've bought several early 911's, (65 911, 67 911S, 73 911S and a 73 911 2.7RS) and this little Signal Orange beauty stands up to all of those. It's a great car which still retains a very original interior in excellent condition. it appears to have been repainted in it's original color once and has certainly been a well-maintained car. It was delivered new in California, but other than that I don't have a lot of history. The undercarriage is certainly clean enough and rust-free, which testify to long-term California ownership. The interior appears to be completely original with good headliner, rear view mirror, sun shades and seats. I'm toying with the idea of keeping this car and would fit new carpet if I did, just to clean it up a little, but i think that there's the right person for this car out there, who might want it exactly as-is or who may want to do their own "sympathetic" restoration . . .
. . . Mechanics, Overall, this is a very good car mechanically. Prior to our purchase, the car spent a considerable time in storage and received a new fuel tank due to deterioration of the original tank. It also had a thorough inspection and oil change. It runs very strong, has a good clutch, tranny and brakes. The headlights, taillights, brake lights and turn signals all work. The suspension and shocks feel very good. The cars starts, runs and stops well enough to be used as a daily driver. As I've discussed above, I am toying with the idea of keeping this car and if I do, I'll have the engine and tranny rebuilt. The car runs and drives just fine as is, but to make it perfect, it could do with a Porsche guru or enthusiast going through the engine and tranny to tighten it up. I only know how good this car can be because of the really exceptional cars that we've had recently . . .
. . . Exterior, This car appears to have been repainted in the original Signal Orange several years ago. The paint is in very condition with only a couple of areas that are showing any wear. The glass, metalwork and overall rubber are all in very good condition with no significant blemishes . . .
. . . Interior, The original black leatherette interior seats are all in exceptional condition. The dash and headliner are in good condition and also appear to be original to the car. The gauges, stereo, air conditioning and interior lights are all in good working order. BLEMISHES: There is a slight "warping" on the top of the dashboard around the passenger-side air vent, which is common on these early Porches. The carpet is in need of replacing, due to the stitching coming apart on the passenger-side of the center transmission tunnel. The electric antenna has stopped working . . .
Well --- even though the three recent S-cars coming up for sale weren't advertised on our site . . .
. . . it looks like Sellers of Early 911s appreciate + demonstrate openness + clarity as far as their descriptions are concerned
Really --- all three Sellers' descriptions are WAY more detailed than I would expect . . . and I'm genuinely impressed
I'd like to think that's because of us, here on the Registry . . . .
. . . but who knows?
One of our member's cars. You know; "the guy" with the Penske Sunoco RSR Tribute/Replica.;)

I just listed this S on eBay.

VIN = 119310550
Eng# = 6391900
Trans# = ?
. . . Two owner 1969 911S Targa in rare and desirable Tangerine . . .
. . . Matching numbers. Original leather 'comfort' seats. Date-matching 15 X 6" Fuchs wheels. Original Mechanical Fuel Injection in good state of tune . . .
. . . This is #550 of only 614 911S Targas made in 1969. Engine number is 6391900. Owned by the current owner since 1979. This is basically one of those "no stories" cars you rarely come across. It sat, protected, for nearly 5 years before the owner realized it made more sense to sell to someone who would use and appreciate it. He had it recommissioned, with fuel purged, new batteries, fuel filter, fuel hoses, spark plugs, new engine & gearbox oil, new engine gaskets, a sending unit, fuses, bulbs, etc. The brake calipers were freed up and suspension bushing were replaced. In other words, a full reconditioning to good driving status . . .
. . . If you have never driven a '69 S, you will be amazed at the lightness and agility of the car. This example is in a good state of tune: starts easily and runs strong; shifts smoothly. -- and really needs nothing to drive and enjoy . . .
. . . Chassis is good, though it has lost some of its undercoating here and there. There are small spots of rust: base of Targa bar on driver's side and left door shell. The car was repainted once and could use it again . . .
. . . Good gaps, as you can see in the photos. I saw no evidence of accident, although the front VIN plate is missing. Chassis stamp is in place, and history back to 1979 is solid. The car has a clean title. Records show the 46,000 miles on the odometer are likely correct, but we don't know about the car's history with its first owner 1969-79 . . .
. . . The dash is a Porsche factory replacement from the late '70s/early 80s. Not cracked like most. Note that the photos show a different engine grille. I am replacing the black grille with the original 3-bar grille that was on the car as delivered. Also, the car comes with one original foglight and one housing as well as the foglight that is currently on the car . . .
. . . As you probably know, if you're reading this listing, the early 911s have been on something of an appreciation streak for the past 5-6 years. And the best-appreciating cars have been the high performance 911s, especially the Carrera RS. The record prices for these cars seem to be pulling up the 911S models. If it's possible to consider a car an investment, the '69S is probably among the best candidates . . .
. . . And there aren't a lot of investments you can drive and enjoy like this one. I encourage you to see the car at TRE in Van Nuys. It can be seen and checked out prior to purchase. Scientific Auto in Pasadena also knows the car and did the recommissioning after its 4-year sleep . . .
. . . I am listing this car on behalf of the seller. I will be happy to answer your questions or arrange access . . .

Thanks! Took about 3 months to find a correct set. Build was in June, Fuchs are 5/69...

Took a quick look at the pics: the car has a non SWB engine lid, 70-71 five bar engine lid grill, 68L rocker decos, LWB engine fan housing with wrong coil, etc. I heard the paint was really nice so I guess the shop that restored the car knew how to prep and paint, but not much about how a MY 67S is supposed to look. The front and rear Amco accessory ram bars make me think of my aunt's 912, but really, a shop that would agree to put a drive-in paint job on the calipers of a 67S and spray bomb them in cherry red should be closed down. Hmm, alot of non-original parts in the rear...wonder why?
Wow that run down was amazing!!! I think that I found the right place to enjoy going for one of these beauty's Thanks for the interesting heads up
Mark
am I better off with an all original regular 911 targa or a restored 911S targa like that one?
I’d say original, original, original.*
As time progresses, there will be more and more restored cars and fewer original cars on the market. You can’t bring originality back, but a restoration with various repro parts is relatively easy.
*the only exception to this are the 0.001% of 911’s restored to perfection by private enthusiasts with 100% NOS parts. These cars don’t change hands very often and when they do, you won’t see them on the market…
IMO tasteful mods are much better than an assortment of wrong parts
One man's "tasteful mods..."
Well, from what I've observed, in the vintage 911 crowd's general wisdom, if the factory ever did it on any car before the date of the subject car -- or within a few years after -- the mod is "tasteful." Mods done 'in the spirit of the Factory' (like drilled door handles or louvered rear panels) are a gray area...
what would you think it would cost to make the car "right"?
What does it mean if the engine numbers for a 1967 911S are 960001- 961178 (according to Peter Morgan's book) and the car has an engine # 961999? The beginning numbers 96 were only used on a 1967 911S- are the ranges ever wrong?
I do think there are exemptions from the rule.
My '70 911T 5-speed has an engine number in the 61098xx range, confirmed by the CoA (for what it's worth...) and the stamped service booklet that came with the car at original delivery. According to all sources I have found so far the engine number should belong to a '70T Sporto (Morgan) or a '70E (Red Book).
I would assume there are always individual cases for which the engine number falls out of line.
IT turns out I got the original Kardex and the numbers are all matching on the car even if it is out of range with the Morgan book. interesting-but all original according to COA on the Sloan car. I think I am making a deal for it
Paternie's Red Book shows an engine number range of 960001-962178 for the 67S...
Thanks for that one. I'm now in contract to buy it but the car still has to be 100% right. Richard Sloan has agreed to make everying right or I can cancel the deal. The car has been beautifully restored but some of the trim and mouldings are definately not 67S but from 1968. Now i am on the hunt figuring out what it is that I am buying and what is needed. Any info is aoppreceiated
Chassis # 500623
For what its worth...some late 67S came with 68 bits. Paul from Auto Kennel has researched this for his recently sold 67S. Might want to give him a call. If it is missing the NLA OE outside decos Erik (strosik ?) is selling a limited run of 67S wide decos. All the other pieces are easier to locate.
We are coming full circle on a 67S slate grey/ Red restoration and I have had to learn all things 67S to get the car right. This car will be perfect when we are done..late spring. The details on of the 67S are unique to that year and it being an S.
Here is a '72 S for sale in Turin, Italy. Seller states that the car is numbers matching and road legal but it looks to be better suited for the track. Perhaps one of our Registry members from Italy can share more about the car. There is no stated price.
