Thread: battery tender connections

    battery tender connections

FINALLY purchased a Deltran Battery Tender to connect to my Sonnenscheins.

I remember looking at others who had the same and they connected the tender's positive AND negative to one side only (passenger)

However, on the web site, it shows the positive to one battery (drivers side?) and negative to another (passenger side?)

I want these to last a LONG time…is there really a difference on the connections?

Connecting it per this diagram prevents the "near" battery from hogging the charge so to speak. It adds the loss of the connecting cable to the system so the battery tender sees a system voltage and isn't over influenced by one battery or the other.

That charger is fine for storage but you should consider the interacter temperature compensated charger for the real thing
another reason I haven't used Sonnenscheins again

I have been disappointed with my tenders(1.25a model) Two different cars, and both didn't keep the batteries charged.

Only problem I've had in 15 years use is with the SAE wire connectors which die and prevent proper charging.

I have the Deltran battery tender and it works fine --but I did notice that the water level evaporates faster on the battery that is connected. So I only connect the tender randomly week by week. This seems to slow the water evaporation while still keeping a charge. Chris

Chances are if the water is evaporating, then the battery has a dead cell, or the charging is not shutting off when it is supposed to. There should be minimal water loss.

I have a Braille AGM battery and keeping it continually on the Deltran drained it. I contacted the manufacturer and they sent specific instruction on how to get it back to a charged state- using a traditional charger - which they sent me. It worked the first time around but not the second.

I'm starting to realize the downside to a dry battery unless someone here has a different idea. If you don't drive often it's hard to keep them maintained. A traditional battery appears to be better in this situation and I don't trickle charge yet it will last for years.
