European VDO Instrument Repair, Restoration & Modification

Hi, I'm looking for a VDO instrument repair shop based in Europe, does anyone have any leads / contacts and critically experience with any?

Good quality work rather than lowest cost is what I'm after (that said, obviously cost will come into it at some point). I'm looking for North Hollywood type quality / workmanship really

I was considering sending to NH but to be honest don't fancy paying the carriage / import duties to the US and back to the UK as the money would be better spent in the other parts I need. The gauges were made in Europe in the 1st place & logic says there must be good VDO repair / restoration companies lurking out there

    I have the following to restore / modify (all early silver dot type);

    1. 250km/h Speedo (just bought from ebay.de / hasn't yet arrived. Seller claims that it functions so hopefully just cosmetic & re-setting to 0 will be required)

    2. Druck / Temp Gauge (working condition currently unknown, but needs some TLC - scratched glass & faded face / ring etc)

    3. Refacing / calibrating one of my spare 6cyl tachos to a 10k instrument. Either that or using a spare 4cyl tach I have and use that as a basis of the 10k / sell my spare very good condition 6cyl tacho - haven't decided which way to go yet. As the car is / will be far from original I cannot see that it makes too much of a difference apart from me knowing its a 4cyl can - thoughts?

    Thanks
    Jon

As you're UK based, you could try to contact http://www.caigauge.com/index.html

They should be able to help you.

I was pointed to them from the guys of VDO France.

http://www.classic-instruments.de lists Elevenparts and Porsche Classic as customers.
No first hand experience with them.

    Brilliant, thank you all

I was trying to avoid going through 3rd parties such as Cranford, PR Services etc as they will only send them off to a VDO specialist & mark up

Oliver have you actually used CAI at all? CAI website doesn't really shout out VDO refurb & modification which seems odd as there is a healthy Porsche community in the UK and Europe who would jump to use their services if better advertised as per NH

I will make contact with all, an let you know how I get on / final results

    Thanks again

    Jon,

CAI is an independant tach manufacturer. The manufacture they own was previously part of the VDO group as far as I remember. So, if they can't do the job themselves, they are well placed to point you to somebody who should be up to the task.

The only experience I had with them, was to get a quote for a special tach, based on a VDO face... It failed because, they hadn't the right mechanism... Otherwise, they weren't affraid by my demand.
