lower trunk / dash cut out

just starting the reno on the 73 trunk , time to strip / clean and repaint ( someone hand painted it )

the fire wall / smuglers box wall and trunk panel below the blower have been cut away at sometime and plated shut . Now i'm guessing it was to fit a heater? but why cut the panel below the blower ?

I honestly don't know what was behind the 'cut'...have included a photo of my recently restored trunk area if it helps you to reconstruct what it should be if you want to take your restoration that far. Good luck!

An AC Duct goes through there. It's always a mess.

It's high enough on the bulkhead (fire wall) that you can shape metal to take the place and weld it in. You won't want any interior present lest you see the whole thing ablaze. That's what I was going to do to a car I owned with AC. Since the car was 100% intact we fabricated a piece of very heavy rubber sheet and covered the void from the inside.
There is a fair amount of "finish" work to be done if you weld in a new piece of metal. Back and front unless you're not too picky about hiding the repair. I just wanted the hole covered and considered someone down the road possibly wanting AC. ALL of the the holes are still there. Chassis holes in the engine compartment (for lines), Evaporator box hole in the passenger footwell bulkhead and this one for the blower.
