Thread: Who is the BEST transmission rebuild expert?

Who is the BEST transmission rebuild expert?

I'm finally getting around to removing two transmissions (915-901) as they both have bad 2nd gear syncros.
I've never had a trans rebuilt before and I don't know who is good at rebuilding them. The only place I can think of is Jerry Woods. But I do recall there is a real expert somewhere in the mid west.
    Thanks.

Where are you? You should be able to find someone local. The 915 isn't the world's most complicated transmission. I've had several done, all at different shops, with equally good results.

Gary Fairbanks in Norwalk, Ct. is one of the best if you decide to ship it.

I'm in San Francisco and there isn't one shop around here that I would trust to do a transmission rebuild.
I'm looking for a Porsche Expert. Someone who loves working on them.

If you are in the Sf Bay Area call me on Monday. We have a gem of a rebuilder in the East Bay
There are many competent rebuilders in other places, though.

Based on what?? SF is largely regarded as a great city for independent Porsche repair shops. I only wish I had your options here in Austin. I can think of 3-4 great shops in and around SF just off the top of my head. Feel free to PM me if Jim's source doesn't work out.

For me, in Portland Oregon I would go no further than Gordon Ledbetter.

I have heard many positive things about Jon Bunin from the likes of Adrian Gang etc.

I would trust a reference from Jim. But for what it's worth, I had my tranny worked on by Alan at The Stable in 1988 and it's still going strong!
