    Porsche Towels

This is not authoritative but something I have heard more than once, during my 356 days as Technical Editor of the 356 Registry website and during my time around early 911's. So take it as a point of departure for discussion - perhaps it will jog someone's memory (Lord knows my is eroding rapidly).

My understanding is that Porsche provided shop towels with travel kits but not with tool kits. Stoddard introduced the towels in the 70's and over the years folks began to believe that Porsche had always included them in tool kits. The towels in the travel kits looked like this (Eric Chernoff photo):

    image.jpg

Note that PORSCHE is all capital letters. There are also thin blue lines on the edges of the red borders. I had one of these in a pristine travel kit in my '60 S90 Roadster. Most of the towels produced by vendors capitalize only the first letter - Porsche - and don't have the blue lines.

    Cheers,
    John

Come to think of it my SWB NOS travel kit does not have a towel and it came in its original plastic bag with PORSCHE printed on the it.

Maybe they only had the towels in 356 travel kits?

Congratulations to your daughter Allen, that's a huge achievement. I think Pops probably deserves a pat on the back too - those things don't happen in a vacuum.

The large script PORSCHE on the towel definitely is the earlier version of the towel. I bought a package of them from Stoddard, say, 10 years ago and they had the large script. My understanding is that the large script version is NLA. And I've seen the large script version for, $100 or more, EACH on eBay.

I appreciate your, and Chuck's, nice comments about my daughter Sara's achievement. Thanks !

original owner kit that started life as 912 type. the son of the original owner couldn't remember if the car was a '68 or '69. dad apparently had both. I sold off the 912 stuff & replaced that w/ 911 type.
kit appears to have lived it's entire life in the closet. the vinyl looks like it was made yesterday. plating on the OG tools & clasps is as close to perfect as one may ever see. I added the towel.
    data points which may be interesting;
    smooth bag
    10,000 volt screwdrivers
    DFS wrenches

Tan liner, 10,000V, chrome raised cutting edge pliers, 19mm LW straight tip.....I'd say, all the trade marks of 1969. Looks absolutely mint!!!

Too many Porsches and one VW are starting to fill up my desert landscape.

Indeed, as Jim states must have been a 1969. Last year of the 912 until one-year only 1976 model 912. Thanks.

I'm curious about the small and large-font DFS wrenches... I've seen photos of the ends (open-end portion) of the wrenches with a nice, smooth, kind of polished machined finished; and I've seen the ends with a more rough, bumpy surface that matches the entire wrench.

Is there a specific finish that is Porsche only (i.e., polished/smooth, rough, or both)?

    Ron,

I don't believe there was a finish, at the ends or on the wrench as a whole, that was unique to Porsche. No doubt, there were minor changes, like font size (and finish details) over the years and, in fact, from lot to lot. Thanks.
