Thread: Oil Temperature Poll

  1. #11
It usually runs 180 or so but coming back from Parade it got up around 190, but that was climbing up a curvy mountain highway to about 3,000 feet at 90 kph (might have actually been mph ) and in 100+ degree weather, direct sun (felt like 110 in that desert). Therefore I voted 180-200.

Brad Penn 20W50, front center mounted cooler with the (lift producing) duct. 2.7 RS spec sorta (does have MFI, heads are T).

Edit: saw your other thread. I have AFMSX gears and the normal 7:31 final drive. Tires are 225/50-16 so the rolling radius is about 12.5". The X 5th really makes it hard to do 65 mph- you either want to let the revs drop and be doing about 50 or you want to just floor it and go way too fast since the engine sounds so good and there is so much thrust available.

Kris, I'm starting to think it's age related (condition of the engine internals, rings ? I don't know enough to guess). I had an 83 for many many years, always ran hot since I bought it at 100K miles. I did *everything* to that car over 12+ years, checked the gauge & sender, cleaned cooling fins, checked for correct placement of air diverters, played with timing, replaced oil lines to the trombone cooler, then installed a carrera cooler with a fan and override switch, notched the bumper, you name it. It -always- ran hot unless it rained, last I checked (sold it to a friend) it had 220K miles + and still was A-OK !

Flip side? My 72T, with a completely rebuilt 2.4 top to bottom. Fresh everything. No secondary cooler at all ;-) Checked gauge and sender as well. Can't get it past 200F to save my life (Only a slight exageration, but I've only seen 210 once on a 95F day after over an hour running pretty high RPMs, ahem, at the speed limit of course). Makes no sense, but there you go.
    Greg.

My '73 S that has a 2.8 MFI with 100k miles runs hot when ambient goes above 75 degrees. Always see 200 and occasionally 210 this summer. My real concern is oil pressure. I posted about this about a year ago. As I near 200 I get close to not meeting the "standard" of 15PSI per 1,000 RPM. I would expect this engine to run warmer.

The temp falls back to the 185 when the ambient temps are less than 70 degrees and the oil pressure also rises.

I am in the process of assembling all the parts and pieces for an external cooler. One part to go.

Rate of conventional oil oxidation doubles for every 18 degrees F above 150 F
I had not heard that before. Presume that applies to dyne oils, not synthetics.

I haven't voted above, since my current car is much later than everyone else's. But FWIW, my '84 3.2 typically runs around 180-190 in most conditions, and even at worst—a couple weekends ago, 95°F outside, 2 hours at 75 MPH with the A/C running (yes, my A/C does work)—it never went above 220, maybe 230 since I can't vouch for the gauge accuracy.

Massaged 3.0L non intercooled turbo with 2 front fender oil coolers and Brad Penn 20W-50, I see 180-190s up to 200 if I am doing a lot of driving in traffic.
