Thanks for your additions. I am sure both of you are correct. My info came from examples that I had in my inventory. I have every reason to believe that the "806.10" version is a correct wheel for a RS. I doubt that there is much difference, if any, between the 805 and 806 versions, though.

Nice looking wheel. I'm sure it feels good while driving.

There was a subsequent discussion on that same 400mm thick grip wheel here: http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...-with-fat-grip.

Some of that thread's discussion centered around the full cross-stitching (as opposed to typical factory "baseball" stitching) where the leather met the spokes. But an interesting last comment from an RS owner who has two RSR wheels said both his steering wheels were indeed cross-stitched throughout - no baseball stitching. Who knows? Regardless, a very interesting thick grip wheel in a larger diameter.

6 pages of post info condensed to one - please make any corrections/additions that improve this condensation - thanks

    ST/R/RS/RSR & 914 STEERING WHEELS
    914 347 803 10: 70/71 914-4 plastic base for original ST/R/RS/RSR
    914 347 804 10: early 4s, flat hub/sunk hub
    914 347 804 11: late 4s, sunk hub/flat back – plastic rim
    914 347 805 10: early 4s & 6s, leather, flat hub/recessed back (best)
    914 347 805 11: ’72 914-4 w/ 90 degree sunk hub/flat back 86mm grip 914-4
    914 347 806 10: Leather -6 Original RS wheel w/ 72mm grip
    914 347 806 11: 91mm grip
    914 347 088 10: very early VW/Porsche leather wheel
    914 347 809 00: ‘74 914s, sunk hub/ faux leather

    901 347 081 10: extremely rare 400mm thick grip leather all cross-stitch

One of the keys to determine whether a wheel has a hub that is compatible with a 911 column is the last 2 digits of the stamped number on the hub. If it ends with 11 is 914/4, if it ends with 10 it uses a 911 hub no matter what it came from.

Is there any reference to part # 901.347.081.20? Wheel is dated 1972 and is leather wrapped.

Remember that this thread is about 380mm wheels not 400mm wheels.

that are flat on the front.
914 347 803 10................... Plastic rimmed 70/71 914/4 steering wheel (You can cover these in leather and they work just fine. Double wrap them and they are even better)
914 347 805 11....................Leather covered 72 914/4 steering wheel (with 90 degree counter sink) Not the best choice but they do work better than the later 914/4 wheels with the
    beveled counter sink.
    914 347 804 11....................Plastic rimmed late 914/4 wheel
914 347 809 00....................74 and later 914/4 "simulated leather" wheels. These things are junk!

Bottom line.........................If it is flat on the front it is best and if it is beveled it will work but not great

THANKS to all who contributed to this thread. I now realize that my hidden away "Factory RS" steering wheel is from a '72 914 [913 437 805 11 -- 6/72]. This one is leather wrapped and appears to have been that way forever. Does anyone know if all of this version were leather covered?

Back then the first thing I did with my RSs was yank the steering wheel and stick a Prototype on!
