We need some clarification here. We're getting metal tags and decals all confused. My '73 has a metal tag. This is an example of the metal tag.

    This is the decal/sticker

When did Porsche start using the decal/sticker?

Prior to MY 1970 all of the tags were riveted
In MY 1970 the non-riveted tag was introduced (Factory cars only - Karmann bodied cars retained their own riveted tags)
At some point during MY 1970 Porsche switched back to the riveted tag. Why? Don't know.
I'm pretty sure DaveP has a general idea of the switchover date back to the riveted tag

    Thanks for that Dave…always learning!

Looking forward to the day when you find out what meaning the centre '8' has on certain 72MY cars!

    Cheers,

Ok, this is where I got one for my '65. Don't know of any non-riveted ones, my '71 911E and '73 911T have riveted ones as well.

I'd pay good money for one as would other I'm sure…..surely a run of 100 or so might be do-able?

I could do these decals, only problem is the embossed paint code. If you could live with the paint code being flat (not embossed) so the plain aluminum shows through the black bar I could do these.

While the 8 was used on a few 1972 cars, the most prominent use was on the 1973 RS cars. Use of the 8 continued at least into 1985. It would certainly be nice to get a definitive answer to the location.

As to the marking of the paint code on the decal, I admit to not having examined one closely. I assume the decal is thin sheet metal. Is the paint code stamped in or is it engraved. It certainly appears to have been engraved since the characters are so fine and clear.
