Thread: '77 & '75 Turbo Look 3.0

  1. #101
Macroni...Maybe doing 'stupid' things to achieve a certain look can be chalked up to my just gettin' old and being a little 'off'.

But even MINICHAMPS gets it right with the flare openings on their 3.0 RS...

It's easier to cut off the Turbo flares and weld on new ones than to rework the profile of the existing flares?

The flares are different both in the opening shape and in their concave/convex curves as they come out from the body. The shoulder edges (surface next to the opening) have different shapes too, so it would be very difficult to change the shape of a turbo flare to match all the characteristics of an early RSR or ST flare. John Esposito has done some good work changing the shape of the shoulder edge of turbo flares to round them out like early flares, and he has also changed how a flare tapers toward the body or torsion hole. But changing the round opening shape to an eye-brow shape, with the complex curves to match the early RSR flares is not something I have seen....not saying it couldn't be done. Also, there are guys in the UK and Europe who are making RSR flares...but I haven't seen them on a car.

    Gib,

Make sure you don't have real turbo fenders before you start cutting and grinding on em, they are worth a pretty penny these days to owners that need to "fix" a turbo that got slope nosed back in the day.

    Phil,

The fenders are original to this 75, and have never been off the car. I gave thought to removing them and mounting stock short hood fenders to install the RSR flares on. But I will stick with the originals since they have been on the car for 40 years now. Here are pics of the flares being installed back in the 80s. They were butt welded as nice as the factory did the rear Turbo flares until 86.

Gib.... Based upon your body of work presented here, I would never categorize any of your decisions as "Stupid"..... The red car is shaping up to be quite a find....

The pictures of that green car are very cool. Metallic paints plus golden hour lighting really highlights the curves.

I agree, the viper green metallic 75 is very, very nice. It recently sold on ebay for close to $71k.

Here are a good comparison of an ST flare eye-brow shaped opening, which looks very much like the 73 RSR/Carrera 3.0 RS/IROC flare opening shape.

    Gib,

Liking all the light yellow- I've got a 76 turbo carrera being repainted light yellow. Wrong fender contour but should be pretty when completed.
