    Opinion on parts: sound pad and pre-heat hose

    This is probably a dumb question. I recently ordered a few parts for a car I am putting back together for a friend, after what has been about a 20-year hiatus from 911 work. I see that a lot of the stuff I used to get easily and cheaply is no longer available, but a lot of other stuff that used to be impossible to find seems to be available now. Anyway, a couple of the parts I received were not like I remembered them being.

    Item one is the insulating pad for the engine compartment. Its been years since I last bought one of these, and what I got from the vendor was not really what I expected. It is light as a feather. Came rolled up with a couple of rubber bands around it, not flat or folded like they used to be. I can't imagine it being very durable, or having much impact on sound. It is a very light foam material sort of "shellacked" on one side with what looks like black PVC glue. It has a semi-official looking part number of 911.556.891.01. Is this just what is now currently available, or a cut rate part from the vendor?

    Item 2 is the paper hose for the MFI thermostat. I ordered the inner/outer hoses. What I received nestles one inside the other like they should, but the inner hose is too large in diameter for the nipple on the thermostat. It seems like the inner hose they sent should really be the outer hose, and there should be a slightly smaller hose inside that. The part numbers were 901.110.295.00 (inner), and PCG.110.296.00 (outer)

    Am I being too picky, or should I be contacting the vendor to complain?

    No opinions from this highly opinionated bunch? Particularly on the sound pad. What and where should I be buying one of these for a '72? Some vendors offer multiple choices. I noticed the interesting thread last week about the perfect repro early pads, but that one would not be right for the '72.

    Pictures of what you got would help. The new factory pad is much better than the original, lighter and closed cell as opposed to open cell. Better foam as the original would absorb water fall down and then fall apart with dust everywhere. These are really wear parts as they last about 10 years.
    Inner hose to thermostat is paper and outer hose is some sort of shiny material. Only the inner part is hose clamped to thermostat.

    + 1 .......... Over 3 lbs. lighter, easier to put in, does not fall apart from age or it's own weight.....

    Is anybody making the shiny black outer hose?

    Most of the new ones I've seen are paper like the inner hose, and it sounds like that's what the OP received. and RSTarga is right; only the inner hose gets clamped. I often see cars where the clamps are over the outer hose. It's too big so the clamp just creates folds and tears.

    The inner hose should slide over both ends easily, but without any slop. Sounds like yours is too big.

    Thanks guys for your replies. I remember the old ones fall apart under their own weight, and they never lasted very long. The new one just surprised me how light and seemingly insubstantial it was. Maybe the pad I have is OK, and an improvement over the old ones? Photos below. Should I use it, or search elsewhere? The appbiz product suggested above sound promising. While I like originality, I'll always give the nod to something that works well, compared to something that just looks correct.

    I looked at the sad remains of the old thermostat hose, and it is indeed sort of a shiny black on the outside like some sort of plastic coated paper. Very brittle and turns to dust if you look at it wrong. I'm convinced now that the hoses they sent are wrong. I'd be fine with black paper, but the diameter is clearly incorrect.

    FI hose

    Here is a good shot of the business end of those hoses, taken from my '69S. Look closely and you will see that the inner hose fits snugly on the pump and the outer hose (glossy black) "floats" on the inner one.
    Also note the original insulating pad at the top of the picture.

    Foam engine bay insulation pad

    I have said in the past, I would not use these foam pads again? Only piece left of the foam pad is the light piece right of the fan housing with the outer skin burned -off and the inner foam piece remaining... (1st & 3rd picture ) cliff

    Have to admit --- I love the OG pads

    I know-I know . . . nasty, dusty/flaky --- + total fire-bait, to boot

    But seeing an OG one --- even if it's dilapidated, shredded . . . = lucky-lucky car



    The Converse is --- whenever I see a replacement . . . I always ask myself . . .



    . . . what happened to the original?
