Brazeale has it right. I grew up in Hayward in the late '50's to mid-'70's. Ely Porsche+Audi was about a mile up the street from where I lived. The place wasn't much to look at (I think that the showroom could hold a single car), but it's where I drove a Porsche for the first time. Somehow I convinced a salesman to let me drive a brand new Irish Green 914 1.7 around the block. What a dog...

Ely P+A became (Bob) Berkey P+A in Pleasanton until his passing in late '80's. The franchise re-emerged as Claridge's in Fremont.

In the '60's many VW dealers were authorized to sell Porsche, but had no parts or service. This 'satellite' dealer arrangement was largely revamped in '69-'70 with the onset of the Porsche + Audi franchise arrangement.

Mozart was indeed in Palo Alto even under Carl R Carlsen's ownership. The current owners have long retained the Carlsen name, and are now in Redwood City.

The Oakland dealer was Martin Johnson. The Martins lived up the street from me and were neighbors of racer George Dyer whom, ironically, was sponsored by the Burlingame California dealer Neufeld Porsche Audi. I am still friends with the Skip Martin whose father owned Martin Johnson. He still has a gaggle of Martin Johnson plate frames

    Hi Nine 17,

Thank's for the input. would you have (or know someone who has) a picture of that dealership or period picture(s) of that area ?

My 991 is Irish Green too, sounds like it was a popular color...

The first owner of my car was living in Austin avenue in Hayward so He must have gone to ELY.

    Hi 91133,

Thank's for the file. I had it already but not complete

I am convinced it was the Ely Porsche+audi dealer in Hayward that took delivery of my car in 1970. Unfortunately this dealership doe not exist anymore (for a long time) and I have not been able to retrace anybody or anything that could prove my guess right.

I am still hoping to stumble across some period picture from that dealer on Mission blvd. If anybody out there has anything, you know where to join me !

In the mean time (since my last post on the subject) I was able to find the first european owner and got some pictures from the car as it was imported in 1996. between then and my ownership (2005) it lost its worned out original seats, the polished steel wheels were replaced by (real) Fuchs rims and the front lights chrome rims were replaced by european specs. appart from that all the rest is still as in 1970.

I am now chasing some period correct seats. I will keep the Fuchs's. All numbers are still matching.

Last week I installed new fuel lines to complement the new fuel tank I installed some months ago.

    Any luck?

Seems to 've been a small store --- no images, as yet . . . only old newspaper ads mentioning

Anyway, here's the address, these days
