If I can weigh in with an opinion from someone that has never owned a Ferrari......the 355 seems to be the best of the 308/328/355 series....great driving car, sounds incredible......308/328/355 lineage is very similar to SC/Carrera/964......each car is very good but they just got better with each model year and the Cup Cars and Challenge Cars just seemed to take each to the next level. My $.02.

Not trying to hijack the Ferrari thread but another direction to consider for the same $$$ is AMG-

I love my Dino but after selling my 330GTS (V12 Convertible) it was hard to go backwards into a modern Ferrari. Although a few years ago I almost bought a 355 Spider. Instead of the 355 I moved into the SL55 AMG (500HP Supercharged V8 convertible) great car and very fast. BUT then AMG introduced the SL65 (604HP Twin Turbo V12 with 750 LBs of torque) these cars are INSANELY fast! And if INSANELY fast isn't enough for just $700 you can buy a little OBD2 plug-in box that re-flashs the ECU and get another 80+HP and even more torque...

Imagine cruising at 65MPH like grandpa but by simply depressing your right foot the 12 inch wide rear tires brake loose as you rocket to 190MPH like a fighter jet on after burner... True the AMGs are very heavy and they can't comfortably carve through canyons like a Ferrari or a Porsche without working hard to control the beast. But all of that effortless power makes you forget about that because they are so damn fast.

Guys take these AMGs to the track and basically stock they get them into the 10 second group at 128MPH, smoking the muscle cars in grandpas MB.

The spirit of my initial question was "what affordable F-car is available right now that has the potential to become a Dino or Daytona later?"

It seems the days of a great 308 for under $50k are long gone. As I peruse the 3 series cars it is apparent that there is a mixed following which leads me to believe that perhaps these cars won't have the long term appeal that my friend is looking for. The 550 on the other hand appears to be a true trophy car that enjoys it all. I haven't read one bad thing about a 550. Plus one can enjoy the awesome performance and appreciation without the restoration process that a 3 series car might involve.

There is a sweet spot in the timeline when buying potential collector cars.
Don't all of us wish we had bought more 911S and 930 cars when they were a relative bargain?

    Hey Frank,

Look to the European markets for what are the up and coming F-Cars. The 3x8 are crazy hot. Dealers are buying US 3x8s and exporting. This started late last year and has increased dramatically over the last 90 days. I too have seen condition 3 (drivers) 308s selling in the $50s. 328s in similar condition seem to be selling in the $60-75k range. There are 2-3 sales of garage queen 328s this year for well over $100k and I believe one sold for $250k.

550s are beautiful, but don't offer the same overall experience. They are GT cars. Very rarely do cars that are primarily GT cars become collectible.

    GT cars are not collectible?

    Have you priced:

275GTB/4, 365GTB/4 Daytona, 330GT, Lusso... 3.0CSL, Aston Martins, Jags etc. Most of these have leather interiors, radios and even electric windows and some even have AC.

I will not mention Gullwings, 356 Coupes and even our 911s...

"A grand tourer (Italian: gran turismo) (GT) is a performance or luxury automobile capable of high speed or spirited long-distance driving. The most common format is a two-door coupé with either a two-seat or a 2+2 arrangement.

The term derives from the Italian phrase gran turismo, a tribute to the tradition of the grand tour, used to represent automobiles regarded as grand tourers, able to make long-distance, high-speed journeys in both comfort and style. "

OK, agreed. I was suggesting that a Pano will never be as desirable as a 911. Or a 928 is in the shadows vs a 911.

If you look at Ferraris the sportier NON-GT versions are more desirable.

I love 550s, 599s and of course the older vintage F-Cars.
