the tank is the same as Davids but i think the hex is bigger that the picture Cees posted but mine looks the same as David's (post #47) so i think Cees one is the odd one out - but may not be from a 73 as he got it off the net

During model 73 a few weeks before end of calendar 72 the drain plug in the strainer cover under engine case pair was made twice as tall — this change is noted specifically in a well known reference book. If memory serves me said it was taller to make it easier to tighten and losoen. Also in my maroon parts book that plug is the same part number as the oil tank drain plug so seems reasonable to assume it also was made taller for same reason. Perhaps the one Cees shows is earlier 73 but without provenance that’s not proven. The line drawing in post #50 from the 72/3 paper parts book (although these are no entirely reliable as reference) the plug as drawn in all my paper editions is very shallow — in fact so shallow no hex is visible in the line drawing. It is presumably the artist representation the shallower hex plug before the noted change late calendar 72? My car was built after the date of change has the taller pair. So possibly they are original.

Ha, now I see it, hex height difference. Here another one on a 73 only tank, also on the net. The one on my 5.73 RS is the taller version. Picture to follow later..

Evidently thd shallower hex was used early model 73 but in Nov 72 the hex plug was changed to be twice as tall for the strainer / cover under casing pair. I would assume similar date of change to taller oil tank hex drain plug since both plugs carry the same part number in factory osoer parts book. My December 72 build RS has the taller hex plugs in both places. Can’t be sure those are its original items of course but taller one in the cover for strainer / cover under engine cases is correct to the (improved) spec so reasonable to assume matching one for oil tank drain is correct too.

The presentation material for the 1974 911 describes the oil tank changes from 1973 to 1974 on page 8:

The last pic at the bottom of the page appears to show the 1973 and the 1974 oil tank side by side:

I found this pic, which I believe is an original 1973 oil tank:

So, I guess it is out of production at the moment. None of the current 1973 repros are correct. Someone ought to start producing these again. How about it, Marek?

That’s the factory kindendienst-information document that Gled49 referred to previously in post #10. I have the English language version of it.

It pertains to model year 74 and explains the main differences eg the compatibility / configurations of filter with tanks, the redesign of the filters etc
