If you're in the U.S.A. and it is a U.S. market car you're referring to, then it is a 68 S in all respects except the motor.

like ed said, the "L" was a US-only model. the "S" engine could not meet smog requirements, so they trimmed up the normal 911 and charged more money. as i understand it, there were several "L" interior trims, including a shiny metal liner at the bottom of the door and rear quarter caps and elephant hide. on the exterior, the bumper and rocker rubber was wider.
if you are considering buying the "L," you might want to be sure that the correct interior is intact. some of those items are really difficult to find.
Earlier cars had the elephant pattern interior and a center bar on the rear decklid. The later cars had the basket weave interior and did not have the center bar.
Nice car to juice a bit because of the S options to the suspension.
Post some pics if you can, we like pics.

Hi Rusty
Thanks for your comments , the S options to the suspension , would that include S brakes ??
The car has a center rear bar deck lid .
Cheers
Garry
It will have S brakes but early S which were 48/38 front/rear and ventilated. They are iron all round. No AL front calipers in 68.

The L was not a US only car. There was also a European version 911L that was a T mechanically and T trimmed externally with the S interior only. Then there were the L Rally Kit comp cars that were trimmed as the T in and out so there were actually 3 versions of the 68L. If you do a search a lot has been written.

For clarification... From what I have read... the S was not introduced into US for '68, in anticipation of emissions problems. Perhaps someone here can confirm this.
And as stated above, it was a transition year, so some variations throughout the MY. Do you know the VIN for the car? Dies the car have the 68 US Lights on fenders?

I understand the Euro 911L was the replacement for the 911 normal in Europe. So the engine was a 901/06 as the 911 Normal as mine is. The 68 911T had a different engine-- one with Cast-iron cylinders, 8.6 compression and only 110 HP. Known as the 901/03. 901/06 engine has 9.0:1 compression and all aluminum cylinders and 130 HP. The same for the US spec 911L. Chris
