Documented ownership history from day one.
Extensive Monte Carlo Rally history and also raced at Tour de France Automobile.
Extensive photographic documentation of period race history.

    DETAILS & STORY

VIN: 9113600526 was delivered to the infamous French importer Sonauto in February 1973 and would go on to have a prodigiously long rally career.
This fully documented and numbers matching 911RS was delivered as a M472 touring optioned car and was painted Ivory white with houndstooth seat inserts.

Jose Grindou acquired #0526 in November of 1975 from Monsieur Grand and quickly modified the RS to go rally racing in various local events. It was the start of many years of racing for #0526 that is well documented with stunning period photography and rally entry list documents.

This car’s highlights are many, including its participation in the 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1980 Monte Carlo Rallies and the 1980 Tour de France Automobile (also known as the “Tour Auto”). Both of these events are recognized as among the two most grueling and prestigious rallies in automobile racing. #0526 was recently refitted with its racing livery, matching its first Monte Carlo Rally participation in 1977 with Jose Grindou and Julien Gacquire. Even though they had entered as simple amateurs, they finished a very respectable 31st position overall. In the 1979 edition of the Monte Carlo Rally, Jose Grindou and Alain Ferrari would finish 19th overall and win their class with #0526. Lastly, Michel Tirabassi and Georges Decour would finish 26th overall in the 1980 39th Tour de France Aoutomobile with #0526.

#0526 was discovered in France in 2014 under the ownership of Mr. Andress who had been the custodian of the car since 1991. All subsequent ten owners of #0526 have been identified and documented over the years which is simply amazing for any 1973 911RS. The new owner in 2014 decided that #0526 was deserving of a completely bare metal paint job. #0526 was found to be in excellent rust free condition and most importantly beneath all the layers of paint it retained its original rear fenders from 1973.

The importance of these fenders cannot be stressed enough. #0526 being one of the very early production numbers means it still came from the Porsche factory with the thinner gauge steel so specific to the iconic 1973 911RS. It is very hard to find a 911RS with original sheet metal or with documented significant race history. It has also been confirmed by two independent experts that the roof and doors are also in the thinner gauge steel. The doors are believed to be the original doors that were fitted to the car in 1973 at the Stuttgart Porsche Factory. Even still, #0526 maintains the accelerator pedal extension that Jose Grindou installed in 1977. These original details are significant for the car’s value and desired among experienced 911RS collectors.

The matching numbers *6630500* engine bearing the mythical 911RS number “500” is still fitted to the car and has all specific Type 911/83 parts fitted to it.

The genuine aluminum VIN plate is still on the car and the dashboard production number 1034444 is the correct one matching the VIN # 9113600526 and it is 100% genuine.

#0526 is fully documented with the whole ownership history known from day. There are many historical documents (tax receipts, old invoices, etc) and important photographic documentation that captures most of the events in which #0526 took part in during its glory days . . .

Thing is you call or email some on a POA listing, and they for some reason won't tell you what they are asking for the car unless you come in to their showroom. At $1M I may be interested enough to fly out and see the car but at $2M not so interested.

very frothy market - people are playing it like stocks so these $1MM+ cars are always POA - they want to find out who they are dealing with and it has an impact on the price -

Why should this RS get a substantial premium? Raced years after birth by amateurs to not very competitive results?
Original thin steel? That's so unique?

The restoration looks nice but the car doesn't seem especially significant. Am I missing something?

'. . . Originally delivered to French importer Sonauto in February 1973, this 911 Carrera RS was delivered in Touring configuration in Ivory White with black interior fabric featuring "Pepita" fabric. First owned by Jean-Philippe Grand, owner of Garage Gras and official Porsche Dealership for Cannes, he would register the car as a dealer vehicle and have demonstration plates for the car. The Carrera RS wouldn't see any racing with Grand, but Jose Grindou, its next owner, would cement the 911 in Monte Carlo and Tour Auto racing history.

Jose Grindou registered the 911 Carrera RS to his name on December 26th, 1973 which would mark the beginning of a lengthy history between the French racer and his 911. Quickly modified to go rally racing, Grindou used the car in a various number of local events. Under the ownership of Grindou, this Carrera RS participated in the world-famous Monte Carlo Rally three times, 1977-1979. Grindou and the RS would have their best Monte Carlo finish in 1979, winning their class in Group 3P and coming in 19th overall. He would have his best finish ever in 1979, racing in the Criterium Alpin – Jean Behra race, finishing 8th overall.

Changing ownership shortly to Franck Galci for 5 months before going to Anthony Fourmachat in October of 1979, Fourmachat raced the Carrera RS in the 1980 Rally de Monte Carlo. Michel Triabassi would then purchase the 911 in August of 1980, racing the car in the 39th Tour de France Automobile (Tour Auto), taking 26th overall. The Porsche then changed hands, going to Transport Pellegrin in August of 1983, to Peirre Berengrier in August of 1987, to Andree Brulat in August of 1989, and then was purchased by Danielle Andress Bertolotti in December of 1991 and would then own the car for more than 23 years.

Bertolotti had the Carrera RS reverted back to its original 1973 specifications a few years after his initial purchase, but keeping the roll bar and participated in a few local tourist-like rallies. He then sold the car in September of 2014 to Pascal Andres (registered to Julie Andres), ending his almost 24-year ownership with the 911. The Porsche was then stripped of its paint down to the metal body panels, and during the process found the original layers of paint that illustrated its color history. Upon removing all of the paint, it was determined that the car was in excellent rust-free condition, with the rear fenders being 100% original and were of factory thinner gauge steel, as were the first series 911 Carrera RSs and early second series cars. With the doors and roof also determined by two independent experts to have the original thinner sheet metal and adding value to the already impressive history, the car was repainted in its original factory color. In-period rally accessories were fitted to the car, with the accelerator pedal extension being a period addition fitted by Jose Grindou and the bodywork was restored in M471 Lightweight spec as it was raced from 1975 onwards. The 911 was recently fitted with stickers returning the car to its livery when it first participated in the Rally de Monte Carlo with Jose Grindou in 1977.

The 911 Carrera RS was sold by Road Scholars to a collector in Los Angeles, California, with the 911 Carrera RS arriving recently at Canepa. Going through the "Canepa Difference" process, the Monte Carlo Rally racer was first treated to a full concours detail, cleaning everything from the engine compartment to the front trunk and everything in between. Requiring only a small amount of polishing, the Ivory White paint has a smooth sheen paired with its period-correct stickers and allows the imagination to bring you back to the start of the Monte Carlo Rally. Mechanically serviced with all of its systems addressed, this Monte Carlo rally racer with authentic racing history is ready for any drive you throw at it, from your short canyon drive to a long historic rally race.
