    This was a very well done hotrod. This just shows that well done hot rods are definitely "hot". It would probably cost $165K and two years time to build this car I would imagine, unless you were in the business or did all the work yourself. I will sell mine if someone is interested.

    It's a nice build and a nice presentation. I keep looking at it for ideas/inspiration on my own '68 that is just getting started on a sports purpose build. As nice as this car is it doesn't look like it would be too hard to duplicate except of course for the Gamroth built Motec 3.2.

    Auction Description:

    - First registered by AFN Ltd, as their official demonstrator of the newly announced '911 E'
    - Used as a competition car in the late 80s in the Porsche Cup series. Won in 1989 and 1990
    - Purchased by our vendor in 1992. Converted to a 'Marathon'-spec rally car by RSR Engineering and Peter Bowden
    - An official Porsche GB-supported entry for the 1993 London-Sydney Rally driven by our vendor and Peter Bowden
    - Complete with its original gearbox, but no engine. Rare opportunity to acquire a significant piece of Porsche history at 'No Reserve'

    RGO 5L had a significant early life as it was first registered on 23rd March 1973 by AFN Ltd, the Porsche importer at the time, as their official demonstrator of the newly announced '911 E' model. It was the sister car to RGO 4L, the 2.7 Carrera which sold in auction back in 2012 for £225,000.

    Used by Peter Balbeck, the company secretary, it was subsequently sold for private use until being acquired by Paul Edwards in the late 1980s for use as a competition car in the burgeoning Porsche Cup series. In fact, it was driven to victory in 1989 by Keith Norman and then sold and repeated the same championship victory the following season.

    Purchased by our vendor in 1992, it was then converted to a 'Marathon' spec rally car by RSR Engineering and also Peter Bowden, who at the time was Porsche GB's most senior technician. Through Peter, the car became an official works supported entry for the 1993 London-Sydney Rally with Porsche GB paying the significant five-figure entry fee and Porsche Germany assisting by providing access to the current technical specification of their factory rally cars.

    Our vendor competed in the gruelling rally with Peter Bowden co-driving and by the end of the second day was leading the rally outright. RGO 5L continued to lead the event for several days until a small accident in Austria, involving the car being suspended over a wooden bridge with a 10-metre drop down to the river below! This drama, captured on a DVD of the event which comes with the car, dropped the crew to tenth overall, but from Graz onwards the car was always in the top three of every subsequent stage, eventually arriving in Shimla, India, in 3rd place overall.

    The car, sadly, did not finish the rally with mechanical gremlins striking the team very late on when they arrived in Chandigarh, that could not be repaired at the time. The car was subsequently repatriated to England and has sat in our vendor's garage reminding him of their epic rally ever since, remaining untouched other than the removal of the engine approximately a decade ago. The car comes with it's UK V5C and a small history file including the aforementioned DVD of the 1993 London - Sydney rally.

    So, in summary, this is a car with a special and significant background that is ripe for a full restoration. Offered complete with its original gearbox, but no engine, it is also a "No reserve" Lot and offers a rare opportunity to acquire and rebuild a significant piece of Porsche history.

    Seller's Description:

    This 1972 Porsche 911 is a dual purpose street/track build featuring RS-style bodywork and a rebuilt 2.7L flat-six running 9:1 compression and mated to a 5-speed manual transaxle. Originally a 911T, the car was acquired by the seller in 2011 and two years were spent bringing it to its current spec. The seller has since driven the car around 10k miles in a variety of events, including the Ramshorn Going to the Sun Rally and annual participation in the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. The engine build features 90mm Nikasil cylinders with J&E pistons and 3-barrel 40mm PMO carburetors, while new timing chains and rails are fitted with 3.2 Carrera oil-pressure fed tensioners. Bilstein shocks and upgraded cross-drilled brake rotors are fitted to all four corners, and stainless steel flexible oil lines connect to the front-mounted oil cooler. This street-legal vintage racer is now offered with service history, a VRG log book, and a clean Pennsylvania title in the seller’s name.

    The owner has competed in 10 vintage race weekends over the past five years including the 2017 Put-In-Bay sports car races, the 2014 SVRA races at Indianapolis Speedway, and the 2013-2018 Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix as shown below. The car remains street-legal and has also taken part in the 2017 Ramshorn Rally.

    Widened with steel RS-style flares, the exterior is finished in yellow with Carrera graphics and features a ducktail spoiler with Carrera RS script. Rust repair by the seller reportedly consisted of replaced or resurfaced metal work. Photos show matching VIN stampings on the A pillar, chassis plate, and front trunk body plate. The 1972-only exterior oil cap is retained, while a 2.7L grille badge and European-style headlights have been added. A removable carbon-fiber splitter is fitted to the front bumper which houses the auxiliary oil cooler. 16″ Fuchs wheels measure 8″ and 9″ respectively, and are mounted with Toyo Proxes tires showing 2016 date codes. Bilstein struts are fitted at all four corners, along with vented and cross-drilled rotors with ATE brake calipers.

    RS-style sport seats with perforated inserts are paired with Schroth Racing 5-point harnesses. The rear seats have been removed and the space has been refinished in matching black carpet. Additions include a removable roll bar, transponder, and a fire suppression system. A 3-spoke Prototipo steering wheel with Porsche crest horn button is fitted, along with a RennShift performance shifter. VDO instrumentation includes graduated oil pressure and temperature gauges and an electric clock. 92k miles are shown on the odometer, however true mileage is unknown. A Kenwood cassette head unit is connected to speakers mounted behind the seats.

    The carpeted trunk is equipped with a racing fuel cell and additional chassis reinforcement. The car runs on 93 octane gas. The engine rebuild included overhauling the bottom-end with new main bearings and Pauter connecting rods. ARP head studs and connecting rods fasten the balanced rotating assembly. 90mm Nikasil cylinders and J&E pistons increased the flat-six’s displacement to 2.7L, which is fitted with twin down-draft 3-barrel 40mm PMO carburetors. Valves received a 3-angle competition valve job and are paired with new camshafts with a modified 911E grind. External additions include 930 exhaust valve covers, stainless steel flexible oil lines, and refinished tin ware. The seller believes the engine produces around 200 horsepower and reports that minimal oil was burned and the car proved very reliable during 1,700-miles of road rallying completed in 2017.

    A rebuilt 915/73 transaxle is mated to a stage 2 clutch kit. Equipped with stainless steel heat exchangers and a twin-outlet muffler. New timing chains and rails are fitted with 3.2 Carrera oil-pressure fed tensioners. A VRG racing log book is included, as well as invoices for engine and body work performed during the seller’s ownership.

    Reserve not met on BAT @ 73.000 USD - understandable - it was a nice build and certainly worth closer to a 100 k ..
