How long does the seat crease last?

Always seat a crease across the seat bottom upholstery when newly upholstered. After a year or two it seems to disappear. Seems to me that somewhere here on Registry I read that it is made by some type of string attached to the underside of the upholstery. Does the string break? Was this crease in every seats made between '64 and'73? Thanks for any info.

There was a similar discussion at the 356 Registry, see Question re original seats.

I believe all the early 911 seats with the pleats running fore-and-aft had the crease but I can only offer proof for the short wheelbase years. Most sport seats seem to have been made differently (pleats running side-to-side) and don't have a crease.

Some time ago, I saw a how-to: if I recall correctly, there are several strings--a set for each pleat. I suppose the springs could break, could come loose, or maybe even the pockets in the upholstery through which the strings run could come open. Maybe someone more expert than I can tell you the typical failure modes.

If it helps any, here are pictures from an April 1965 brochure:

Tom, to answer the question, most of the time reupholstered seats "replicate" the pleating of the original seat. Originally there was a string that went all the way across and it created the loops. The string then went back the other way thru its own loops and pulling it down evenly. If I get a chance tonight I'll take a picture of it from a 914 seat. This process is very tedious to do which is why most upholstery shops simulate it.

........ I misread the original post so it's a little off topic but I'll still try and get you that pic of the original string.
