    MFI tuning in north SFO bay area ?

    I'm tired of messing with my MFI - 90% there but not 100% ! My mechanic is superb for everything else, but I fear we're not making progress past 90% on the MFI tune. Everything is new (TBs, engine, plugs and wires, distrib, valves are adjusted).. Still in order to be super smooth it needs to run too rich for my nose and there's a small dead spot around 3800 RPM... For this one time infidelity, I'd like a recommendation for someone that is an MFI-God in SFO, Marin (preferred), Sonoma or East bay, if possible, and will take the time to spend a day on my car with an exhaust analyzer until it's 100% right... Thanks for any recommendations!

    In my opinion you've got two (three if you're willing to travel ) choices:

    1. Since you prefer Marin County, I'd call HI-TEC in San Rafael - excellent Porsche / Audi shop with impeccable reputation and all-around capabilities.

    2. In Concord right on Buchanan Airfield, there's Tom Martenot at DEUTSCHE MOTORSPORT, who is in the process of doing a carburetion / AF ratio analysis on my own car to fine tune the mixture throughout the range, but also knows MFI inside out as well……usues a MO TEC AF analyzer and knows and interprets it masterfully.

    3. JWE, Jerry Woods Enterprises, Campbell, South of San Jose - legendary capabilities and stellar reputation as a Porsche racing specialist , AND has an engine dyno which he uses to great effect…………….not the cheapest, but very good.

    You won't go wrong with any of these shops.

    Thanks guys... Actually I am a stone's throw (OK maybe slingshot) from Hitec, ScarGO and proshop. I just wasn't sure who among them might be an MFI expert, and I knew Hitec changed ownership - thanks for the perspective...

    Did you get your car sorted out yet? I need MFI tuning on my 72 T following a top end overhaul. It runs rough when cold, and has some minor backfiring when hot. Also it occasionally idles at 2k rpms. I don't know how to improve it further, and it has been to 2 (quite expensive) Porsche mechanics on the Peninsula who made it worse, so I undid their work.
    The MFI pump and injectors were overhauled by Pacific, valves adjusted, electronic ignition installed but it is still difficult to get the timing right. I'm beginning to suspect a worn distributor or throttle bodies.

    HiTec sorted it out, mostly. The car runs the sweetest it ever has, without being overly rich (which was the previous bandage).... I want to say from memory that the fuel pump was delivering too much fuel and that the timing had changed for the worse... With the basics reset and the MFI distributor re-tweaked some more, it screams now...
    He did mention that while MFI makes for great race engine - at full throttle, it never was the smoothest of all injections... That said I no longer feel dips in power, it runs sweet - idles a little too high (1100 rpm) but that would require another trip and several hours. I'm enjoying it as is for now...

    I can now breathe with my window down when I stop and my exhaust catches up with me! Before i was suffocating on gas fumes and my eyes were watering like I was peeling onions ;-)

    On my other 2.8 rsr MFI motor, I used Schatz & Krum in Sacramento to dynotune. GD Racing in San Bruno built the motor and recommended Stu Krum from Schatz to tune it. They had the car for a while but were excellent. My motor was previously too lean on the upper RPMs and too rich on low RPMs and the injection pump had to be removed for Gus to adjust it. After getting the pump back, it was dynotuned and all the black smoke on low rpms were gone. Plus, the gas mileage improved and got 30 more HP! No problem on the idle for that engine and it made over 300HP.

    I'm in the middle of this right now. Have sent out the throttle bodies and awaiting their return. They were worn and were allowing air in to the throttle plate shafts. While waiting I had Gus at PFI check the injectors and they spray well and fine.

    I recognize the "too rich at low RPMs, poor gas mileage ... etc" symptoms.

    When my idle started climbing on my 2.2S to 1500 to 1700 rpm's,one tech said I had air leaking past the throttle bodies. So that means the stacks need re-doing.(throttle bodies). I took the car to another tech and he said that is one possibility but also it could be just my distributor out of wack. Chris
