Such a personal thing. We all have our own level of tolerance for patina. Mine, if I'm honest, does not extend to cracked dashes no matter how original. Reminds me of the "original paint" quandry. I just looked at a 72S with original paint that is quietly for sale here in Austin. It was a perfect example of the line being crossed where "original paint" = "needs to be painted".
Cracked original baby!!!!!!!
So long as my personal threshold isn't crossed
Yes, personal it is.....
( a few of my lower dollar cars do have dashes with several hairline cracks , but it is representative of the car as a whole. It tells the 'truth' about it's history. And if the cracks bother me a whole lot, I am not above using a toupe' to cover them up. A dashmat carpet protector on the dash top.)
Unlike my firm displeasure in viewing one on a man.
Or, in the spirit of equality, any woman. but, I digress ~

Very interested in your opinion on this. My car is closed to be 100% original from paint to interior to engine and it is in a great shape for its age.....but it has a cracked dash (car spent most of her time in Nevada and Texas). I live with it as it came with the car as is everything else on the car but I have to say that each time I take the car it bothers me. Should I keep it as is to preserve the originality of the car or shouLd I find an OEM used dash in better shape or should I go for a lakewell or similar.....

Very personal indeed. Much like choosing a stool softener.
Peter,
You forgot two boxes:
* Extremely nice used original. (No cracks, tears, cuts, or signs of vomit)
* NOS (PM me if you have one available please.)
(Wish I had a dollar for every time one of my posts was censored. Those were SOLID butt crack jokes.)

Agreed on adding "extremely nice original". This is the way I think I should go.
This is the car. You can see the crack on picture #2 in post #2.

PO did an attempt to repair it but he was not as successful as initially hoped and the crack still shows pretty badly.

NO repro . .
. . . ANYTHING but repro
I know-I know . . . at some point the supply of Real Deal Stuff runs out --- but/until then? . . .
. . . I'll stick w/ Original . . .
. . . even if it's flawed

In retrospect to the female in the above photo, the best of both worlds might be recovering a cracked dash. Keep the original dash and match up the covering. You're saving a bundle, have NOS and your dash is new with you calling it original. Is that called a g-string?
