    BUT

what if that one digit off was a factory supplied unit, and a documented 'error' on their part ?

Or in the case of some factory race cars, utilized bits and pieces of their shared brethren in the heat of battle ?

Validation by paper trail of course ....

Funny time to bring this up.
I recently had an argument err....discussion about a car that I was asked to look at. The seller said it had the original engine....."I know because I took it out of EXACTLY the same car...same year...same model." I kept telling him it wasn't the original engine because it didn't have the original engine number. After going back and forth a couple more times, we ended at an impasse...We clearly had a different definition of "original".

Numbers matching and period correct are two very different things. And, as values increase, correct definitions matter even more. As someone else said: original paint with one re-spray is not original paint!!!

What about an early T Targa with a clearly better engine like a 2.4E motor, or a 3.2 Motronic, or a 3.8 Varioram. Is the 69-73 T with the original 110-125hp iron cylinder with matching numbers going to bring more???
I guess so, although I unmatched a 69 T Targa back in the day (the 80's), and now own a 73 T Targa with a 3.2 Motronic that I love dearly, just as it is...

Of course any car with its original engine is worth more, regardless of what other engine is put into it (unless it happens to be a VERY special engine). You can always put another engine in your car but you can't always find the original engine once its lost. But I will say that a 3.2 would be a lot more fun than a stock T engine.

    Haul,
Suspension mods were minimal. 17" Lindsey Fuchs, Michelin Pilot Sports tires, Elephant bushings everywhere, f/r sway bars, pretty much stock torsion bars, S brakes in front, Elephant Camber braces, corner balanced, Bilstein sport shocks. Weight is 2450 with me on board. HP about 240. Still has original 915 with 7:31
It's a lot of fun to zip around in, and I get over 20 mpg most of the time. Hi way higher.
