Thread: Non matching question

  1. #21
I have never put a lot of extra value on a 'numbers matching' car...here's why. I would much rather have a 72T with a 2.7L MFI engine than one with the original T, and especially if the 2.7 has a 7R case rather than the original 4R/5R case. I'm a founding member of R Gruppe and have always loved a PERIOD CORRECT modified car with better performance than original using factory Sports Purpose mods. The most valuable competition cars...RSRs, STs, and rally cars seldom if ever have an original engine because it was used up in competition. Unfortunately the Matching Numbers valuation has caused a lot of fraud over the years, another reason the concept doesn't appeal to me. I realize the 'Market' values matching numbers pushing their $ numbers higher, and that is why I have always stayed away from Factory Correct cars. These cars always have many newly rebuilt or replaced parts that are made by different suppliers, or redone by current craftsman often to a better level than original factory work. I like a car that has some earned Patina more than a Perfect 100 point car that never existed in the day. A Survivor car driven to an event with wear-and-tear apparent is much more appealing to me...but I am no expert, just an enthusiast with a passion for 70s 911s that are fun to drive.

Obviously a broad cross section exists in this community. From a utilitarian standpoint I could care less about matching numbers; unfortunately when it comes to restored collector cars, buyers call the shots. I have no problem obeying the rules when it benefits my pocketbook. What a buyer wants, a buyer gets. On a mismatch situation if they will pay extra for a case that's only one digit off then I'll do my best to make that happen. If there's no value in that then I'll simply install a case that matches the year/model.

How about this question: If a seller has a beautiful 73S with a very spunky RS spec non-matching motor, BUT is including the original case in the sale does that car command more or less than market price?

    Should definitely be worth more.

Not trying to what if this to death but I've seen "matching case thrown in" ads that lead me to believe the case is unlikely to be serviceable.

So, assuming the case can't be brought back...How much does that increase the value?

As long as a serial number is there, no such thing as a case that "can't be brought back".

All you have to do is look at what is done in the early Ferrari (1949-59) world all the time... If the headroom is available in the budget, there is plenty of technology and craftsmanship available to restore damaged parts, even large castings..
