    Steering wheel stitching

    I want to re-stitch my existing steering wheel cover. It is on my factory (69) wheel. Has anyone done this and if so some tips and photos would be very helpful. My existing cover is in great condition but the thread is starting to fray in a couple of locations. I also would like to change the color of the stitching to match the exterior color of my car. I think my cover was done with non-waxed thread along with age to cause the fraying.

    Unless you're determined to do it yourself, I just had davehanning@aol.com (Portland, OR) do mine (stitch/dye) with excellent results.

    I took some photos of my existing cover and it does contain a bit of patina but shows no deterioration of the stitching holes, just frayed thread. It also looks as if the frayed thread in one of the photos is the beginning knot was started on top rather than underneath. The photos also expose an actually dirtier cover than it appears in real but after removal I'm sure it will need a good cleaning. I have watched some videos and notice that some are sewed with a constant thread on both sides of the length prior to placing cover on the wheel to do the final stitching. Some feed back on that look would be cool. Should I decide to replace the cover entirely can the existing cover be used as a template or would the old leather be stretched too much and create an issue in regards to the required tightness of the new leather?

    One more photo to show where the stitch has let go. I also notice the seam where the two ends meet is actually on one of the pedal and not the bottom of the wheel. Is it supposed to be located on the BDC

    That cover looks a bit different from the one on my '68 and the stitch pattern is also different.

    Did they come from the factory wrapped? Mine definitely looks as if it had been replaced, especially with the stitching knot exposed above the cover. Do you have a photo of yours?

    Some definitely came factory wrapped. I have a '66 912 that has an aftermarket wrap that looks similar to yours. It has been on for decades and has the patina of a factory wrapped wheel. My 911 wheel has a rubber-feeling and looking rim. It would definitely have needed a cover.

    Yours looks more padded than mine. Lakewell has a recover kit but I want to use blue thread and it's $55.00 shipping. I guess I could just get some blue thread. Dallas Custom Steering Wheel looks to be a reputable vendor.

    Dallas steering wheel is excellent, started to do my own wheel, VERY tedious process, they finished it, were very reasonable and it was perfect
