Damned impressive for a first shot if you ask me! Very nice.

Understanding that you're not gonna start producing these anytime soon, can you share the material and technique details for others interested in DIY? I second that!

Just to follow up on the gas tank "sombrero", i received an email from Nick at Specialty Cars :

    Peter,
You have been in contact with me on the spare tire sombrero shaped pad on the early 911/912 fuel tank. To sum it up what I was experimenting with did not work out as I hoped and I do not have the time to invest in this project at this time.

I was working with the old 356 style tar backed sound pad material to make this sombrero and did not have much luck with it, it just wouldn’t move and stretch as much as it needs to. If you could make a mold and press this material to stretch and shape it to fit the fuel tank I think that maybe the ticket. Possibly the people that reproduce the fuel tanks would be able to do this as they have the stamps for the tanks, just a thought.

Dang it,.... back to Square One it seems.
Franz, have you had any time to look into this further?
    Or maybe Eric Linden?

Out of curiosity, what years were the "sombrero" used? Just '65? That's a small audience to tool up a mold for repops... surely one could get close with the tar sheets discussed and a vacuum bag.
