Franz mentioned Bitumen in another thread which reminded me that it’s time to sweep the dust off this one.

Any progress on making an authentic sombrero?

Nick at Specialty Cars Service Center manufactures sound deadening for 356 restorations. Dead nuts. He would likely make these if there was a market. The process is somewhat arduous. Bill Perrone was a source but it's my understanding he's retired from producing these panels.

    Nope.

It’s definitely not a fiber board material at all Tom. Pretty sure it’s molded Bitumen.

He uses a backer with a tar-like substance applied (not sure what but he has to use the entire container once opened). Stoddard is doing sound deadening for the 356 too.

And 4 years later (1st post 07-15-2015) and still sailing in the doldrums....

I reckon the reason there isn't one is that there is no upside to making it.

Bill did it w/ a guy so that guy might still be willing to supply the material.

Cinco de Mayo this week; good luck on the sombrero, amigos.

    Sorry you guys...

It's simply not a fiber board material. You're going down the wrong road.

To do this right it's going to need to be molded Bitumen. Anything else will look like turd.
