Thread: What I Like Most About an Early 911 is . . . .

  1. #21
    Not in order

    1. Lightweight, small but versatile
    2. 6 cyl with ITBs and ... MFI ... the WHOOOOOOOOO sound!!!
    3. No assisted brake-steering
    4. Simple specs, prime materials = "easy" maintenance and reliability (rarely breaks)
    5. Turn-key no headache classic
    6. The moment when you feel the gears engaging one after the others ... makes you think you're Brian Redman in a 908!
    7. You can sell to wife the idea you're doing an investment
    8. Almost unlimited stock of spare parts (at a price)
    9. The six instruments
    10. Possibility to join clubs like this and meet some nice people

Karim, I think you will find many here will agree with you, just look at the 'Other Porsche Passions' section to see many expressions of broader love for the mark.

I haven't driven a 997 but used to own a bumper car 911 and a Boxster S. I drove the latter all over, including most of the way across the US and back, and compared it with the 2 911s on a set road course. It was faster on bumpy curves and on straights. Great car but not as involving as an early 911, didn't have quite the same road feel or as much throttle powered rotation fun in corners.

The early 911 is the one I kept and built up into a hotrod. I'd still like to have a roadster and if McLaren or just Gordon Murray will build me a carbon fiber RS-60 like car, I'll be set.

oh - I also want an electric robo-car and a small camper...

I was 15 when my car was built in 67. When I go for a drive that car makes me feel like I'm going on my first solo drive. I just makes me smile.

    Why I like my 911(s)
    1) The excitement when it starts (admit it - it doesnt start every time you crank the key, and that adds to the thrill)
    2) The adequate heat it generates when you don't think you will get any heat
    3) The buzz through the entire car that leaves you tingly
    4) Having to loosen your seat belt to open the window on the passenger side.
    5) Opening the window to adjust your mirror --- although....
    6) Visibility is great- there are no blind spots the car is too small!
    7) Your right hand falls straight down from the steering wheel on to the shifter.
    8) You really do need to have both hands on the steering wheel; and don't sneeze!
    9) Floor hinged pedals.
    10) rear quarter windows that open
10a) the front vent wing windows that open (= good ventilation)

One thing I always liked about the early cars was how cool they look with the windows cracked open about an inch or two. I don't know what it is, but there is something about the line created by the top of the window and the door frame . . .

Also, the car is much easier to get in and out of than my 2015 Cayman --

    Cool

I pretty much agree with all that's been said............

    I'd like to add:

I most like explaining the performance, age of the car, and sometimes the age of the driver, to young people who think they are driving 'fast new sports cars' ............

    ... and so it goes
