    15x4.5 fuch finish question

ok ive searched all the posts here and pelican and may have missed it. my question is the finish on these wheels appear original. trying to confirm the roughness of finish in between paddles and lip appears that scratches/roughness goes under paint too. i have found a lot of polished pictures -none original does anyone here know -thanks

Those look like they did when new. The polished finish was only on the face of the petals and the rim.

Visualize a big buffing pad coming down on the wheel. The only places it would reach is the "face" of the wheel.

Personally IMO this is how they look best as opposed to completely polished to a sterile state.

If you look in between the spokes. You can still see witness marks of the hand grinding that occurred and also some of the hand paint finish.

    Harvey?

Harvey will answer soon I'm sure.... I'd opine but I'm sure I'll give an underwhelming comment compared to Harvey. I will say that there is a customer (DL) of Harvey's that like's his 4.5's done very rough with file marks in between the paddles. I like that first pic, looks most correct to me.

While no Fuchs expert, my wheels were refinished by Harvey, who I consider the best at what he does (plus, I've known him since the late '70's).
Anyway, yes, the 'webbing' area was originally a rougher, frosty finish with the lips and spoke faces only receiving a mild polish.

In several of your photos, the spokes appear to have been 'over-polished.

The wheel in the OP photo is stock except someone has polished the anodizing off of one or more of the tops of the spokes.

The shunts and other "flaws" wheels were "smoothed" out after forging with a 60 grit grinder then the were lathe polished as said above.
    Then anodized.

This the best photo of a original stock that I could find easily. (My apologies to whoever I copied it from)
Everyone tends to over restore them. We try our best not to as we remove the corrosion and damage.
We also, as Eric said, purposely leave or put in some grinding marks back in the rough area so they don't look too smooth.
I can show some of our work but the question was about the original wheel finish and I don't want to confuse the subject.

Just to give you an idea of the rough forging that was left on many of the Fuchs. The finisher just didn't get all of them knocked down with his 60 grit grinder.
Although this a 6" wheel the finish should have been the same if not better than what was on the 4.5 wheels

Even though this is a later flat 6 (they should have been good at it by now) you can clearly see the groves from the polishing lathe. Most are much better but looks like the spoke finisher sometimes got in a hurry also. We are hesitant to leave our wheels at this stage but they still should have some lathe "marks" to look original.
