    Label on Seats.

I found these labels on the metal bottoms of my '68 swb. I'm puzzled by the 12/68 date when the build date per the COA is 4/4/68. The seats match the COA-brown leather with headrests and the car came with records back to 1969 so I have to think the seats are the ones that came with the car. Anybody have any thoughts?

Yes 12th week. Most manufacturing uses week and year date codes, because that is how production is scheduled. Germans are particularly attached to this numbering system. Unfortunately not all suppliers continued to use them. My '73 seat labels (found under the seat covers) have stamps 27373 and 08373. Could be day/year codes but I doubt it since 083 was a Saturday in 1973.

Incidentally, the company still exists as part of the Canadian based Magna empire.http://www.stuttgarter-zeitung.de/in...61cc4cdde.html which appears to be cutting jobs left, right and centre. Quite the opposite of what we are normally used to here, where foreign companies trim Canadian jobs and move them to low wage countries.

And also, in the 70s it was still very common that people worked on Saturday (6 day work week).

Day 083 was a Saturday. My (perhaps flawed) logic was 083 cannot be a day/month because you need 2 digits to handle the month and 2 digits to handle the day. My other label in my seat said 27373. Could be 27th of March, but then what would 27th of November be ? Not enough digits in the stamp code. Or maybe they just add digits as needed ? I dunno. It would make more sense that the top and bottom half of the seats were made in the same month, in which case the 3 is the month. But why not 03 ?

This is true, although German unions were pretty strong in the '70s. Then again, I think the Macan line runs 6 days a week right now, because demand has been so high.
