As for black under the grill, obviously very difficult to be conclusive looking at grainy old photographs........but even if they were meant to be, I dare say sometimes the factory simply forgot!

It seems generally accepted that a Kardex for an early car is hands down the best means of identifying its "as delivered" state. Engine, gearbox, paint color, interior color and materials, description of optional equipment, dealer/distributor, name of original owner, early warranty history and lots more are all provided on the cards the factory meticulously kept on file, filled out manually on card stock pre-printed for the purpose.

Sam provided his recollection of the optional equipment he special ordered for the car pictured earlier in this thread, seen at rest on the quay down at Terminal Island in the Port of Los Angeles on October 13, 1967.

Sam related that he first became familiar with the optional Recaro sport seat in December 1966 when he took delivery of his first 67 S at the factory. He liked it so much he paid full price and had one retro-fitted at the factory on the driver side of his first 67 S, the car now owned by Tim Roper in Great Britain.

For his second 67 S, the car down at Terminal Island, he remembered that he specified sport seats in black leatherette for both the driver and passenger side, among other options like an outside thermometer and a limited slip differential.

Sam's recollection about the special order optional equipement was spot on. The Kardex for his second 67 S documents that optional equipment he recalled specifying on the order form. And to close the loop on this car's first owner, the Kardex also shows Sam's name in cursive, boldly written in a confident Teutonic hand.

Its a nice thing when old factory documents close the loop on memories from fifty years ago and validate the authenticity of things only dimly remembered until an old photograph of a car down at Terminal Island makes it all seem like yesterday.
