    To compound that, Mike your carburetors were probably IDA's. The 69 T carburetors are IDT's.

    My mistake, actually the IDT carburetors were 1968, 1969 they were IDTP carburetors. Not a whole lot of difference though I don't think.

    Wouldn't miss it! I'll have a set of these with me... first prototypes for my approval. Yes, they have the little hook at the top, and they are about 3.5 inches long. I borrowed an original from Larry Markham.

    Cheers,

    '78 MBz W123 . . . .

    . . .

    '. . . 34,500 Original Miles

    * Light Ivory (623 hellelfinbein) on Bamboo MB-Tex Interior
    * Automatic Transmission
    * Clean and Clear California Title
    * Mostly 1-SoCal Enthusiast Owner
    * No Accidents/Mostly Original Paint
    * Original California Blue License Plates

    . . . The W123 or C123 Chassis Mercedes Benzes having always had a strong following, but they are finally becoming a cult collectible. In particular, the diesel engine models are very desirable as time has proven these to be incredibly well-built machines.

    This W123 Diesel was built in April of 1978 and sold new shortly thereafter by Colonial Imports Mercedes Benz in Glendale, California. It was sold new to a Mr. Lou Donolan who was a local resident. It was ordered with the following options:

    * 4-speed automatic transmission
    * Central locking system
    * Automatic antenna
    * Radio Becker Grand Prix
    * Lockable glove box
    * Automatic climate control
    * Front and rear electric windows
    * Heat insulated glass all the way around
    * Electric sunroof

    Mr. Donolan was truly a renaissance man. He was a gifted engineer by trade but also accomplished in designing and building props for the film industry as well as building/repairing airplanes, boats, trains, and, of course, working on his Mercedes. He had several Mercedes over his lifetime, but this one held a special place in his heart. This is not one of those cars that has low miles because it sat unused for decades. Rather, this example was frequently and lightly used. Mr. Donolan commuted 3-miles each way to work in it for decades until he retired. It was always garaged and he performed all of the regular services himself. He truly doted on this car. He passed away at the age of 95 (2-years ago) and requested that his daughter find another Diesel enthusiast to continue the care.

    His daughter brought the car to Mercedes Motoring in Glendale. They are specialists in 70’s and 80’s diesel Mercedes. They have restored and managed over 1,500 examples throughout the years. The owner stated that this 300D was one of the top 10 he had ever seen. From the originality, to the condition, to the way it drove, to the amazing owner (who he did meet), it was the “complete package” for any enthusiast and/or collector.

    The current owner is a serious collector who only buys the best of the best. He has several W123 examples and all of them are low-mile examples. This one he keeps here in his SoCal home and uses it while visiting. He has put 2k-miles in the last 2-years as he uses it regularly when here. During his care, he has properly and frequently serviced it a marque specialist in Orange County. Services recently performed include:

    * Oil service
    * Replaced alternator
    * Replaced spark plugs, belts, air filters
    * New Mercedes factory battery
    * Repaired vacuum system for door locks
    * Replaced a couple of door seals
    * Serviced sunroof motors/cables

    This example truly feels like you are transported back to the late 70’s. Everything is so fresh that it’s hard to believe that it’s 40-years old. The paint looks stunning and is absolutely immaculate. The pin stripping is hand painted on by an artist at the selling dealer when new. I measured the paint with a meter and it appears mostly original with the exception of the trunk lid and some light blending on the hood. The color matches spot on and there is no visible difference. We believe that the work was probably done at the Mercedes Delivery Center when new. There is one tiny pin point chip on the edge of the front hood and some light checking below the rear bumper behind the rear wheel (see pics). There is also a slight superficial crack in the headlight surround (see pic). The wheels are wearing their original hubcaps with original paint as well. They are wrapped in new Michelin tires. All the glass is original and perfect including the windshield.

    The interior is equally as nice and fresh. The seats show zero wear. The headliner, carpet, and door panels all look perfect. The dash has no cracks. The gauges look new and all work properly, including the clock. The original Becker radio and power antenna work great as well. A hidden Bluetooth system has also been installed and is easily removable, but pretty darn convenient. The climate control systems works properly and the A/C blows ice cold.

    If you have never driven a W123 Mercedes, then you are in for a treat. They are one of the most solid and substantial feeling cars on the road. What’s remarkable is even after 40-years, there are no squeaks or rattles. The quality of materials and build was like no other. This was truly the end of an era. I was mostly surprised at how spritely the power felt on this example. Most of the diesels I’ve experienced had high miles and felt pretty tired. On the contrary, this one starts easily and has responsive power. It is fast enough to accelerate with normal traffic without feeling like you are going to get run over or blow a black ink-like cloud over 4 lanes of traffic. The handling is tight with no wandering. The brakes have excellent initial bite with no fading. This MB could easily be used daily or taken on a nice vintage tour. Although there were many of these built, just a handful have survived in such impeccable condition.

    This Mercedes comes with extra keys, the original owner’s manuals, original tool kit, spare, jack, original/unused first aid kit, original blue CA license plates, a full set of CocoMats, and an extra pair of front mats . . .
