I hate to correct someone who’s been in the car business longer than I’ve been alive but....
Those blue spark plug wires are the rarest part on that car and one of the key pieces that you don’t find correct on restorations. Those blue wires (I believe made by Bosch and if not Bosch then Beru) are a one year only FACTORY 1964 part. Once the car went in for a tune up and the dealer laid hands on the car, adios. They’re hens teeth to find.

Interesting . The 20K mile 1964 bug chassis under the kit car that my dad has owned since 1966, and has only been driven about 10 miles since 1966, does not have blue wires. I suppose it's possible somebody would have replaced the wires within the first 2 years and 20,000 miles.
No worries Jos, I should have put a question mark after my statement... I honestly don't know the answer.
I've never professed to be a VW expert and would love to see proof of the blue wires being a one-year-only feature. Thanks.
So after researching trying to find a tech bulletin or concrete evidence beyond my own experience I've found that it wasn't '64 only. I've only ever seen them in '64s (both Type 1 and type 3s) but had never seen them in earlier cars and reading through a couple Samba threads it appears other people have had them in their low mileage '63s as well as earlier cars.
One thing that I have never seen before though that is on the 22 mile car is white wire guides and what appears to be some kind of white asbestos seal in between the engine tins. You can clearly see it in this pic.....
but to keep this on topic, the car is still for sale for 1 million doll hairs. Seriously?

Even I know that the original plug wire clips were translucent and the little heat riser plates always had asbestos.
And most people don’t get the large washers right on the pulley guard screws either.
Guess I do know a little bit about old Bugs. At least on the motor.
Partially bustedThey're definitely factory plug wires. Unfortunately in my earlier days 20 years ago or so I threw away a set or two thinking they were aftermarket junk but only to realize they were the original plugs from new.
As for the asbestos seals and the clips, I guess I've never had unadulterated cars to worry bout that. I just drove em til I put in more oil then fuel.

The heat riser plates were double wall and a pre-formed asbestos piece fit in that space. G
