Rocker Panel Deco question- foam insulation?

    Hello,

I bought new chrome rocker panel deco pieces for my car and noticed that the old beat up ones had foam insulation between the lower screws and the body. Is my car a one off, or is it necessary for some reason, ie prevent rubbing or trapping water?

    Thanks,
    Neil

That's original, and probably there for the reasons you mention. From what I can tell most aren't bothering with this, but I fabbed up something similar when I installed my new ones.

IIRC, the factory used butyl tape between the aluminum rocker trim and the body, to prevent rubbing leading to rust. It's the same stuff that's used along the fender to body mating surface. Easily sourced, just type it into google. I used it when I put my rocker panels and fenders on.
