    antenna 1965

What does the right antenna for a 1965 911 look like, what to look for specifically?

    Jacques,

If you're looking for an original antenna, you are ambitious! And, the correct antenna goes on the left--not the right (sometimes I can't help myself).

I believe Porsche 911s came with both Hirschmann and Bosch antennas. It seems Hirschmann (which--at least in the USA comes from Becker) was more common that Bosch (maker of Blaupunkt radios) even though Blaupunkt radios seem more common.

Here's the antenna which came in 301382. I believe it's the original Hirschmann; I can't prove it's original but it's old and it's broken.

And, here's the replacement antenna in the car. It's a Hirschmann and the most incorrect thing about it is that it's extra long (it can extend maybe 3 meters). I believe the chrome pieces and the rubber base gasket are the originals--I had the chrome bits re-plated.

You might notice that the coaxial cable on the replacement doesn't unscrew like the original's and it's nearly parallel to the antenna instead of at 45°.

Just finding an antenna that will fit is a challenge. I think the hole size is 19 mm and there are two layers of steel which the antenna mount must reach through. Then there's a metal wedge on the old antennas to match the angle of the fender.

On my car, that wedge (which came from the original antenna) seems to have gone partway into the antenna hole so there are more threads exposed than there should be. Someday I'll remove the door and try to fix that.

My '65, VIN 301100, had been off the road since 1974 when I acquired it and the antenna, which based on appearance and what I know about the car I believe to be original, was a Bosch blue tip. My guess is that there are several antennas that could be considered "correct" for 1965 cars.

Jim, I saw the correctness of the antenna top being confirmed by Jim Breazeale and Irish911 in this interesting thread. txs again for clear pictures.

There are a few threads knocking around now on this and I think I have looked at all of them
So far as original Hirschman (65) Antennas go, it seemed reasonably clear to me that 45deg angle plug is "early perhaps swb" and paralell plug is later lwb era.
As mentioned by JP seems we can throw Bosch Blue tips into the equation for earlier cars which makes sense as these were common on 356's of the era.
(happy to be corrected if this is wrong)

Here is the antenna from my 66'. Trying to determine if it is original? Are these restorable?

Since it has the stabilizing bracket on the bottom, and chrome nuts I'm sure that is original. Replacement ones are not as long and you need to add an extension to get the original bracket to line up with original screw hole in fender joining panel.

Here is some pics of the antenna in my 65 356C that was made in Jan of 65. Looks just like the antenna in post # 7. Notice the different slot for the key from Jim A's antenna.

    Regards

Wow! You even have the little plastic cap that prevents it going all the way down so that you don't need the little key to get it back up.

It may be restorable. You might ask Victor Miles or Joris Koning--I believe they've both restored antennas. You can find contact information for them on the 356 Registry Vendors page https://porsche356registry.org/vendors

The 356 Registry Vendors page also has contact information for Woody's Custom who can sell you antenna keys. I think they have Bosch as well as Hirschmann keys.
