    550 Spyder question

I was at the 2016 Amelia Island Concours and was looking at a 550 Spyder. I noticed a detail that I had a question about. At the time I didn't ask the owner but it has me wondering. Near the rear suspension there were a couple of small brushes and I was wondering what their function was. Any 550 experts out there care to enlighten me?

    Yes,
Those were to brush the tires clean of rocks, dirt and debris on rotation so that they would be clean when next touching the pavement.

If the brushes didn't touch the tires, how did this work? Looks more like a shield to keep debris from flying in to body area.
