    Question Looking at wheels

I am planning on driving my car some. I would hate to hurt one of the original wheels dated 4/72 on a 5/72 car. Plus I am going to have them restored.

So, I was thinking of going to 16"... I know, I know. But the availability of tires is so much greater. Even more so going to 17", but 16" is where I am drawing a line I think.

What size tire will be close to a 205 60 15? Who is a decent source for the wheels?

Who's car is it on page 29, bottom, middle in the last issue of Esses? The eggplant car with the rack.... ? I am wondering what size those are. They are larger than 15" but don't look too out of place.

    Paul,

    That's Tom Ridings car...
I believe those are 16 x 7's all-round, not sure of the tire size...
They might be 205/55-16 Yoko Advan's... If that's true, that size is VERY close to a 205/60-15

    Hope this helps,
    Chuck

You should buy a set of 6 X 16 wheels from the front of 911SCs or 89 and earlier Carreras. Shod them with 205 X 55 X 16 tires. You probably won't put 15 back on the car. No rub problems, a better tire patch and much better selection of tires. I'm pretty sure Harvey would agree. The car on page 29 appears to have 15 X 7 wheels and 60 series tires. A dangerous combination if you value the paint on your rear quarter panels.

    Regards

    Jim
PS: I hate to admit this but I just happen to have a set of 4 16 X 6 alloys in stock. There goes my credibility!

After reading Chuck's post. I'm changing my mind and thinking they are 16 X 7s made to look like 15 X 7s. My warning still applies.

Look on the bright side. 16's make tire choices a little easier and the 6x16's can be made to look close to a 6x15 cosmetically. I run 195/55/16 up front and 205/55/16 out back on my SWB 67. My rears have a 1/2 inch added to the inside lip so they are 6 1/2's. I had 7x16 911R's with a full inch added but the 205's would't work so I sold them to a LWB guy. He loves them. If I had a LWB car I would run 215/50/16's out back so I would have front and rear at 24.4 inches.
    A 205/55/16 is within 6 rotations per mile compared to a 205/60/15.
Here is a picture of a 6x15 next to a 6x16. The 6x16 is on my car.

What Jim said + add a set of Bridgestone RE11's, life will be better than ever. Store your restored 15's.

I have put on many sets of 6X16s on narrow body cars. All have liked them. Not just for the tire selection but for the handling (shorter sidewall).
I put a set of 16s with DOT-C tires on a 68 with a twin plug 2.8. He called back screaming...I thought he had been in a wreck....he said he could do wheelies now there was so much traction....
Who knows maybe he really did. Anyway he said it was the first time that he could really enjoy his car with the big motor.

Attachment 380225I've used 16-inch wheels for decades now. 6-inch on the front and 7-inch on the back.

205/55-16 tires all around. I have two observations.

I won a couple of autocross championships with this combination. They do work.

Secondly, no one has ever noticed that I have 16-inch wheel. It could be that the bright Weidman polish job distracted them or the black painted set confused them.

I see no reason to go back to 15-inch wheels. Besides I probably couldn't afford them.
