    123 ignition problem.

Hi all. I'm trying to fit a new 123 ignition to my 2.2E but for some reason I don't get how the wiring goes, it says NOT to connect the CDI unit to the new distributor but then how will it get a signal, also supposed to get a LED light up but I have nothing. I have the correct unit and the numbers match with my old Bosch but don't want to blow the new one by just guessing. I'm not sure if I should leave the yellow/blue wire from the CDI unit to the coil or not, doesn't say in the booklet how to do it. It's imported from the manufacturer in the Netherlands so they are closed now until Monday for answers but I want my baby on the road before then, it's going to be a sunny weekend for a change in England. Help would be appreciated.

I could be mistaken but I was under the impression that 1-2-3 has CDI built into the distributor. So you just need to connect it to the coil and the coil back to the top of the distributor. Which 1-2-3 unit have you got?

Hi Andy. I have a Porsche 123 E ignition unit. The website says that this is suitable for 1969 to 1971 911E and S models, there is a different one for 911T. There is no mention in the manual booklet supplied another the CDI unit but I have bee on their website and it states that the 123 ignition should not be "directly" fitted to it. Not sure if this means direct wired to the CDI or via the coil, if I leave the coil with only the red and black wires connected then how is the unit going to get its main power for spark generation. It's all very misleading. I understand that the 123 unit has its own built in CDI but surely this has to have a power source also ??? Has anyone fitted one of these that can help.

I would contact the manufacturer, I have never heard of such a unit.

When there are other tried and true solutions, both factory and aftermarket, why would you want to try an oddball product like this?

I have no personal experince although a couple of my clients have these and I believe the 123 unit is extremely highly regarded by the performance guys in the 356 world.....

This is what I've heard too. My intention is to use this while having my original is being rebuilt. They are supposed to be a great bit of kit. I'm surprised that more people don't use them. Be good if i could get it wired up tho.

I have fitted these to a couple of cars and they generally worked well. You can not keep the original cdi unit wired up. The 123 takes all the power it needs from the connection to the positive lead on the coil. The wiring and installation manual is quite clear that you need to check the primary resistance of the coil also. It recommends fitting a new one for peace of mind.
The ones I fitted were on a 356 and a fiat 500 so I am unsure if the tach works straight away with the 123 on the 911.

    Good luck.

Ok ive sorted it out. Managed to find a German forum that shows you how to wire it through the CDI unit. What a piece of kit, runs super smooth. Well happy.

    Hello,
it seems there are several versions of 123 ignition, but personal I would pay attention to use it with HKZ CDI. On their webpage, they warn to use with HKZ, but soerm distributors ahev a solution...
