    Kardex date question

While this question pertains to a 912, I'm guessing there is someone on the S-Registry that can shed some light on Kardex dates.

I recently bought a 912, VIN 353296. The VIN would make it a '66, and the Kardex confirms a build date of May 23, 1966. However, the delivery date is shown as October 31 through the Glockler dealership in Frankfurt, as a Euro-market car. This is where it gets weird: The decklid has the numbers-matching stamp, but it is clearly drilled for the '67 lettering (as opposed to the slanted script). The car is titled as a '67. One knowledgeable person suggested that it may have been a press car or dealer demonstrator for Glockler, which evidently had a close relationship with the factory. It is a Porsche-bodied car, silver over red with factory sunroof. So, is this a late '66 or a very early '67 ?

Do you have the Kardex, and does it state demonstrator? and what history of service? I am not familiar with the VIN sequence on the 912s. Where does it fall in the range for each year?

My car was also a demonstrator for Glockler as well (68S though). It has a July build date, and delivery shortly thereafter.

Your gap is quite interesting, as a build date of May would put it still in the '66 year, if I am not mistaken.

    good morning,
it is quite often, that between off the line finishing and delivery to the dealer some time is going along.
Concerning the decklid and the scipts: it was sometimes done in order to "fake the new model year" and if it was delivered after the summer holidays to the dealership, maybe the lid was changed, too?
but what i wonder is your vin:
    is a digit missing?
either 353296 as a Porsche built
    , or
    453296 as a Karmann built....?

    but just in generell:
may, 23rd is making it a 66 model...

Also, although some references are made to VIN 353999 in various literature, Dave Pateman has been in contact with the factory, and discovered that the Porsche built 912 production ended at 353592 in 1966. This means there is a gap in VIN #'s up to 354001, the first VIN of 1967 model year.

Thanks very much for the feedback. Sorry for deleting a digit from the VIN. Corrected above, it is 353296. Here's the Kardex. A lot of entries, none of which I can translate.

great color combo! Your car left the plant 5/23/66 and was not sold until 10/31/66. It IS a 66. My bet would be is that gloeckler 'made' the car into a 67 because it was sitting in their lot, and after sitting for 3 months unsold, it looked 'old' between the 67 cars that were coming in. Could they possibly have filled the slanted holes and put the 67 script on? A lot of warranty indeed, the last one was in July 1969, still done at gloeckler. It is hard to ready but it had quite the writeup in July 67.

Sunroof and an ambient temp sensor are some rare options, post some pictures of the car please!

Thanks for that info, Jules. I wish the car was as handsome as when it left the factory, but history has been a bit cruel to it. It is now a project. Someone thought it needed to be red. The engine is missing but the original gearbox is present. The upholstery appears to be original but is in poor condition. You'll note replacement fenders, and that the wipers park on the wrong side for either a '66 or '67. I haven't poked around enough to see why. I've looked very carefully at the decklid for filled holes or other evidence of a slanted script but can find nothing; a pic shows the VIN stamp. I'm seeking a euro engine for it...maybe that original third piece is floating around somewhere!

Please post a photo of the paint badge; The actual code stamped there is of particular interest.
