    Late 65 interior reference photos

Where could I find the best reference photos for the 12/1965 manufactured 911 about the interior as there is quite many open questions? Like should I have the rear seat lower parts with these extensions around them or not, should these car have smaller or larger ignition bezel, what is the correct material for rear seats back parts that are against firewall, just to name few...

The only source I know with this kind of detail is Brett Johnson's The 911 & 912 Porsche: A Restorer's Guide to Authenticity.

It does have photos of 1966 back seats. The back seat bases do have the leatherette extensions or "rims." The back of the folding seat backs are carpeted ("salt & pepper" velour) and the front of the firewall is leatherette.

Even this gets a little vague on some of your points; Dr. Johnson's not 100% clear about the ignition bezel. It would help if you gave details:
    • Chassis numbers?
    • USA or Rest-of-World cars?
    • Does the ignition lock the steering column? Locking & non-locking seem to have different bezels and at least in the '65 Model Year USA cars seem to randomly have locking/non-locking steering columns.

This will help the real experts on these particular cars answer your questions.

I'm personally fond of materials printed when the cars were new: Porsche brochures and magazine articles. But, most magazines tested early '65 911s and didn't revisit the 911 until the 911S came along. Also, Porsche, being a good Swabian company, tended not to shoot new photographs for brochures so even if you can find 1966 Model Year brochures the photographs might not be correct.

I had scanned a copy of the Owners Manual that came along with my car.... There was some comments elsewhere about it being an interesting item due to its publish date (01/65).....

Check out page 36 & 37 regarding the ignition switch (not the PDF page, the printed page) and the picture of the bezel, which looks small to me.

It's great to see the Driver's Manual online, but it doesn't answer the original question which was when the ignition bezel changed from small to large. The picture on page 30 is a picture of a very early car:
    • The knee pad doesn't wrap around the sides of the dashboard.
    • That's an early "six piece" dash (there's a cut the full height of the wood strip at the right of the ashtray). The Five-piece dash came by March of '65 (see Special early 1964 features on 1965 cars).
    • The trip odometer reset is a very early type.

And, one little nit: it's not dated 1/65. It's not clear in the scan but if you check the original it says "Edition I/65" (not the numeral one but an upper-case "I"). That could mean January 1965 or it could mean the First Edition of 1965.

I think you will find that the larger bezel came in with the 1966 model (August/September). Mine (Sept RHD 302136) has a bright metal centre though later the centre became black, I think. Don't know when though.

Thank you for the responses. I have Johnson´s book and many others but still some details are easyer to show from photos to my interior guy and photos I have been able to find are usually from already re-made interiors that have some mistakes or I cant be sure how correct they are. For some reason MY66 cars often have some other interior than what I have, red leatherette. Bezel is easy to change but with seats I will want to make things 100% correct in the first try as this is going to be very expensive for sure.

304598 (june 1966 birthdate according to kardex) was a US delivery car and had the rear seats with extensions, backs of folding seats had carpet tacked to them (literally tin tacks) and the front of the firewall was a similar vinyl to the dash covering.

The ignition is chrome in the centre with the large black bakelite bezel...

The wood dash is five piece...

    hope this helps!!!

the kneepad wraps around the dash...

Sorry to have misunderstood. Most questions along these lines are from folks trying to determine when a change occurred.

Here are some photos of the back seat area in my car. It's an earlier car and a different color but the concept should be unchanged for your car.

Those aren't the original style harness anchors.

And, Original Porsche 911: The Guide to All Production Models 1963-98 by Peter Morgan has photos of a Slate Grey '65 911 with a red interior. Again, it's an earlier car and this book isn't necessarily the height of scolarship but it will give you an idea:

There's an old eBay auction for a '66 911 (304015, built 28 March 1966) with some good photos http://www.ebay.com/itm/1966-Porsche-911-/390820405161 . There's no way to guarantee it's a perfectly accurate restoration but it does have some good photos which show a large ignition bezel.
