from my old parts, nor from pictures of original parts i can make up whether the finish of the wood on a 1965 dash should be satin glossy-ish or really shiny glossy.
any opinions?

It is semi gloss with lots of grain at the surface. Definitely not smooth and high gloss.
txs guys. does anyone have good pictures of a new or NOS dash?

Currently out of town but can send photos of unrestored dash in a week or so.
Maybe these are some help.
Here's a photo of the dash in an April 1965 brochure:
And, in the for sale thread FS: "V" code '64/'65 Blaupunkt Frankfurt there's a photo of what sure looks like an original--but not perfectly preserved--dash finish:
I'm thinking it was a kind of medium gloss.

Txs Jim. I'd say this is all semi gloss. What do we think here?
Chuck, txs for checking.

The surface on my car was original. The surface varnish is very thin and satin in finish. I have applied a new coating using a fluff-free cotton pad, a trick given to me years ago. Gently rub a minimal coat of varnish onto the surface and let it dry. You may need three or four coats but it's up to you to judge just what is right. It is a very different finish to a brushed on coat. If faded, the richness of the colour can be enhanced using a tinted varnish. I used a Red Mahogany dye.
Hope this helps.
