wood/steel steering wheel with thicker rim and 64 dated

a friend of mine just found this 42cm steering wheel+batwing in his stash and noticed that the wooden rim is 2-3 mm thicker than a standard wheel(he has several to compare)
the spokes are steel and 64 is stamped in the steel core not the hub.the batwing is also an oddball..the wallthickness appears to be slighly thinner and therefore the hole thing is pretty fragile
anyone any idea where this could have come off...

I have previously posted here this factory prototype wheel that I obtained in 2015 from a former Porsche design shop engineer. He said that circa 1970 he was given two of them by a friend, also a Porsche design engineer, and he used them as wall art for years. The diameter is 420 mm, the wood rim is definitely thicker than normal measuring 21 mm, and is a blond mahogany; there is no stripe. The spokes are steel. As I recall, there are no numbers that I would call a "date code". His only recollection was it was "an early 911 steering wheel". Top photo is as obtained; bottom photo is after restoration by Bruce Crawford.
