    Thumbs up

The first time I saw Scooter race was the first time I ever went to a road race... The '66 Times Grand Prix, the very first CanAm at Riverside Raceway... He was driving a Lola T70

Then I saw him in '67 at Riverside and Willow in a 904 and a 906...

Then I happen to be at March '68 SCCA National at Willow when Shelby came out with the C/P Toyota 2000GT's driven by Scooter and Davey Jordan.... Davey got stuck behind a Tiger at the start and Scooter and Milt Minter (in Vasek's '67S Davey drove the year before) took off chasing Bill Young's Lotus Elan in the lead.
Well, this was one of the BEST stories Scooter used to tell...
Scooter and Milt couldn't catch Young's Elan... so the fight was for 2nd place, the lead switched several times until the last lap when Scooter finally got by Milt through turn 8 (flat out right sweeper into the infamous turn 9 closing radius) Scooter lost Milt in the mirrors, came out of 9 and headed for the second place flag.... all of a sudden Scooter catches sight of Milt on his left!!! ON THE OUTSIDE OF TURN 9's closing radius... Milt had 4 wheels in the desert, keep his foot in it and passed the Toyota before the pit in, put it back on the track.... and won second place!!!!!!!!

    ... I was a kid, but I was there.....

Then in '68 I saw him race in a SCCA Labor Day National at the second to the last Santa Barbra Road Race at the Goleta Airport track... driving Auto Zipper's 906....

I got close to Scooter and Davey, and some more of my old heroes when they came out 25 years or so later to vintage race...

    - One of a series of photos the Great Pete Lyons took at THAT National going into Willow's turn 8 ... in this one Milt has the lead, only to give it up later... then to beat the Toyota at the finish.... Photo by Pete Lyons

    - My program from the '68 Santa Barbra race where Scooter is entered in Auto Zipper's 906
