    tire for 904 wheel

I want to run a semi-period correct tire on a set of 5.0 and 5.5 in. 904 wheels. Any suggestions? And anyone know if tubeless will work with the rivets?

Regardless of whether or not the rivets are sealed, I believe the 904 wheels lack the safety humps that keep the tire beads seated in case of pressure loss. I would recommend you stick with tubes in those wheels.

I was considering Avon. Two sets, one for vintage racing and one for show. Any thoughts?

These are going back on a factory prepared early 911. I would appreciate moving back to tech info if it meets the standard.

    "Semi-period correct" ??

Period correct would be bias-ply 500-15 on the 5" and 5.50-15 on the 5 1/2" both tube type. I believe the valve stem holes are different dimensions tube to tubeless.

If you go tubeless you may need to modify the stem holes. Harvey schooled me on that detail when I wanted to run Avon Cz's on my 7Rs. The bi-metal rims may be different from early Fuchs.

Other considerations: rim offset, and fenders...stock, rolled, flared?

This is going back a ways, but --- I ran regular ol' (Cooper-sourced?) Michelin XZXs on the GT wheels mounted on my car . . .

    . . . no tubes . . .

    . . . no problems

    Wheels were re-finished only --- walnut-shell-blasted + re-painted . . . never taken apart, 'sealed,' or messed-with in any way

I remember being at Gary Emory's store years ago, when he was still in SoCal, and hearing Rod talk about how stupid he thought it was to drive around on wheels held-together by a bunch o' copper rivets . . . but I never had any problems . . .

    . . . but --- I'm an idiot . . .

    . . . and no --- that's Junior/not me . . .
